Films & TV Shows
‘Stand by Me,’ ‘The Lost Boys’
Sutherland’s interest in acting brought him to the stage at a young age, when he appeared in a production of Throne of Strow. Max Dugan Returns, his first feature film, was released in 1983, and he co-starred with his father. After appearing in coming-of-age films such as The Bay Boy (1985), Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me, and the vampire thriller The Lost Boys (1987), he joined Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, and others in the popular western Young Guns (1988). Sutherland founded Stillwater Productions around this time, named after a river that ran through his Montana ranch.
‘Flatliners,’ ‘A Few Good Men’
Sutherland rose to prominence in 1990 for his performance in Flatliners, a psychodrama co-starring Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Julia Roberts. Following his clash with Tom Cruise in the blockbuster A Few Good Men (1992), he led the star-studded ensemble cast of The Three Musketeers (1993). He made his directorial debut the same year with the television drama Last Light, in which he also starred as a prison inmate.
‘Dark City, ‘Ground Control’
Sutherland’s preference for dark, intensely psychological scripts was on display in the late 1990s. In 1997, he appeared in The Last Days of Frankie the Fly, a modern noir film, and Dark City, a science fiction-mystery film. Woman Wanted, his second self-directed TV film, was released in 1999, and he also starred in Ground Control that year. Sutherland then shifted gears for Picking Up the Pieces, a satirical comedy infused with screwball humor, released in 2000.
Playing Jack Bauer in ’24’
Sutherland debuted as counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer on the hit series 24 in 2001. The show quickly became a must-see television show, earning its lead actor Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Sutherland reprised his role as Jack Bauer in the made-for-television film 24: Redemption in November 2008, after several acclaimed seasons. The seventh season of the show premiered in 2009 and was followed by two more seasons, making it the longest-running American espionage drama in television history. Unable to ignore the success of 24, Fox announced in 2013 that it would return as a limited-series as 24: Live Another Day. The series premiered in 2014 to acclaim.
‘Touch,’ ‘Designated Survivor’
With the 2012 premiere of Touch, Sutherland’s character, Martin Bohm, discovered the unusual powers of his special-needs son. The show was cancelled after two seasons, but Sutherland returned to television in 2016 with Designated Survivor. At the start of the series, his character, Thomas Kirkman, the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, is thrust into the presidency after an attack kills the sitting president and Congress during a State of the Union address. After two seasons on ABC, Designated Survivor was picked up by Netflix for season three in 2019, but was not renewed for a fourth season.
Sutherland began devoting more time to his musical interests after more than three decades on the big screen. In August 2016, he released his first album, the country-flavored Down in a Hole, on his Ironworks label. In April 2019, the artist released her second country album, Reckless & Me.

The actor was married to Camelia Kath from 1987 to 1990, and they had a daughter, Sarah Jude. He was famously engaged to Julia Roberts after that, but the couple never married. Sutherland then married Kelly Winn in 1996; the couple divorced in 1999, and Kiefer filed for divorce in 2004. The divorce was finalized in 2008.
Sutherland was arrested in West Los Angeles in September 2007 after making an illegal U-turn and failing a field sobriety test. He was already on probation for drunken driving in 2004, so he pleaded no contest and served 48 days in jail.
