Early Life

Kelly Ripa was born on October 2, 1970, in Stratford, New Jersey, to a bus driver and a labor union president. She began studying ballet at the age of three and appeared on Dance Party USA when she was 19 years old.

Playing Hayley Santos on ‘All My Children’

Before landing the role of Hayley Santos on the ABC daytime drama All My Children in 1990, Ripa attended Camden Community College in New Jersey, where she performed in local theater productions. She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1993 and 1999 for the role.

‘Live!’ with Regis, Michael and Ryan

Ripa took over as co-host of ABC’s morning talk show Live! with Regis and Kelly in February 2001, replacing longtime co-host Kathie Lee Gifford. Ripa’s endearing personality and upbeat sense of humor proved to be the ideal counterpoint to Philbin’s snobbish style of entertainment. She continued to appear on All My Children on a regular basis, alongside husband and co-star Mark Consuelos, until she left the show in 2002. She returned for two episodes in 2010 to commemorate the soap opera’s 40th anniversary.

Philbin announced his retirement from Live! in January 2011 at the age of 80. Ripa took over as host, and the show was renamed Live! with Kelly. Ripa had various guests co-host the show with her, similar to the vetting process she went through to team up with Philbin. In June 2012, Live! won its first Emmy, and in September, former NFL star Michael Strahan was cast as Ripa’s co-host. The name of the show was changed to Live with Kelly and Michael.

Tension erupted between the two co-hosts in April 2016, when Strahan announced his departure from Live for Good Morning America. Ripa reportedly was not informed of Strahan’s departure until the day of the official announcement, and she did not appear on set the following day.

Ripa returned the following week to speak in front of the audience about “workplace respect.” Despite the speech, the tension between Ripa and Strahan was palpable; after consulting with Live and GMA producers, Strahan parted ways with Ripa in May 2016, four months earlier than planned.

Until a replacement for Strahan was announced, the show was renamed Live! with Kelly. A year after Strahan left the show, Ripa introduced Ryan Seacrest as her new co-host in April 2017, with the show renamed Live with Kelly and Ryan. Seacrest, who has hosted American Idol, American Top 40, and Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, first appeared on Live in 2003.
