Childhood and Early Love of Cooking

José Ramón Andrés Puerta was born on July 13, 1969, in Mieres, Spain, before moving with his family to the outskirts of Barcelona when he was five years old. Andrés, the son of two nurses, frequently assisted his parents in the kitchen; mom Marisa prepared simple but delicious meals on a tight budget, while dad Mariano churned out massive helpings of paella for friends and family on weekends.

Andrés has often told how he eagerly awaited his chance to jump in and mix the paella, only to be told to tend to the cooking fire instead. After his frustration boiled over one day, his father took him aside to teach him a lesson for the kitchen and beyond: If you learn to control the fire, you can do whatever cooking you want.

At the age of 15, the aspiring chef enrolled at Barcelona’s Escola de Restauració I Hostalatge before being drafted into the Spanish navy, which gave him his first glimpse of the shores of the United States and the Caribbean.

Andrés then resumed his career in the kitchen of Ferran Adrià’s famed El Bulli restaurant in Rosas, Spain, until late 1990, when a misunderstanding with his boss forced him to resign.

Restaurants and ThinkFoodGroup

Andrés landed a job as a cook at the Eldorado Petit in Manhattan after moving to New York City with only $50 in his pocket.

Andrés relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1993 to run the kitchen of Jaleo, a new Spanish restaurant. He quickly transformed the restaurant into a popular dining destination.

Andrés’ success grew as he expanded his reach in the D.C. area: in 1995, he took over Café Atlántico’s Nuevo Latino menu, and in 1996, he opened Zaytinya, a Mediterranean restaurant, and Oyamel, a Mexican eatery. Meanwhile, he launched José Andrés’ tasting counter minibar, an acclaimed venue that went on to earn two Michelin stars.

Andrés and partner Rob Wilder formed ThinkFoodGroup in 2006 to consolidate their business interests. ThinkFoodGroup was in charge of 30 venues around the world by late 2021, including é by José Andrés in Las Vegas and the Mercado Little Spain market in New York City.
