Early Life

John Felix Anthony Cena was born on April 23, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts, as the second of five boys to John Sr. and Carol Cena.

Cena showed an early interest in sports and exercise. Cena was a regular gym rat by the age of 15, and after high school, he went to Springfield College in Massachusetts to study exercise physiology and prove his worth on the football field. Cena was a Division III All-American offensive lineman and team captain at Springfield.

Despite his father’s wishes, the new college graduate left Massachusetts in 2000 to pursue a career as a bodybuilder in California. The 6-foot-1-inch aspiring star found the transition difficult. He only had $500 in his pocket to get across the country and settled. He folded towels and cleaned toilets at a Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach to make ends meet. He lived in his 1991 Lincoln Continental because he couldn’t afford an apartment.

Foray into Wrestling

Cena’s breakthrough came in early 2000, when he had a casual conversation with a wrestler at Gold Gym who encouraged him to take classes at Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW), a former World Wrestling Entertainment developmental company.

The idea of making a living as a wrestler was not completely foreign to Cena. His father, John Sr. (a.k.a. Johnny Fabulous), worked as a wrestler and businessman. Growing up in suburban Massachusetts, the younger Cena spent many hours glued to the television set, watching his wrestling heroes like Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, and Shawn Michaels battle it out in the ring.

As a wrestler himself, Cena’s rise was swift. Cena, dubbed “The Prototype,” won the UPW championship on April 27, 2000, in San Diego, California. Cena drew the attention of WWE executives over the next year, and in 2001, the young entertainer signed a developmental contract with the company to work at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW).

WWE Debut and Champion

Cena won the OVW heavyweight title in February 2002 and made his WWE debut the following June when he joined the Smackdown roster. Cena won the United States Championship two years later, defeating The Big Show in Wrestlemania XX in March 2004.

Cena has won numerous matches and titles since then. In 2007, he became the first wrestler to win a match against Edward “Umaga” Fatu.

Cena, whose good looks and sculpted body earned him the moniker “The Marky Mark of Wrestling,” rose to prominence along the way. Cena, like Hogan, demonstrated that his ring showmanship translated to success in other venues.

TV, Movies and Music

Cena appeared in the action films The Marine (2006) and 12 Rounds (2009) through WWE’s production wing, with the latter involving the wrestler attempting to save his girlfriend from a gang of terrorists in New Orleans.

Album: ‘You Can’t See Me’

Furthermore, Cena, who has long been a fan of hip-hop culture, debuted as a recording artist in 2005 with the release of his rap album, You Can’t See Me. The song debuted at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States.

‘Trainwreck’

Cena received critical acclaim in 2015 for his performance in the hit comedy Trainwreck, directed by Judd Apatow and written by the film’s star, Amy Schumer. Cena portrayed Schumer’s muscular but sensitive boyfriend. “I got my chance to throw my sense of humor out into the world while also playing this hulky guy who’s a softy, which in real life I’m a very emotional guy,” Cena explained to Business Insider. Later that year, he appeared in Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s comedy Sisters and had a small part in Daddy’s Home.

‘Blockers,’ ‘Bumblebee’

Devoting more time to his acting career, Cena co-starred in the war film The Wall in 2017, voiced the titular bull in the animated Ferdinand, and reunited with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg for Daddy’s Home 2. The following year, he starred in the raunchy comedy Blockers before returning to action with Transformers spinoff Bumblebee. Cena then starred alongside Keegan-Michael Key and John Leguizamo in the 2019 family comedy Playing with Fire as a trio of wildfire fighters befuddled by mischievous children.

‘Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?’ Host

In addition, it was announced in 2019 that Cena would host a new version of the game show Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?, a position previously held by comedian Jeff Foxworthy. Prior to the show’s June debut, Cena emphasized the parallels between entertaining audiences as a wrestler and as a TV personality, and stated that the new version of the show would focus more on the kids than the adult contestants.

Personal Life

In July 2009, Cena married his girlfriend, Elizabeth Huberdeau. Cena filed for divorce in May 2012, allegedly shocking Huberdeau. Their messy divorce was widely publicized, but they eventually reconciled in July of that year.

Cena began dating fellow WWE superstar Nikki Bella in 2012. He proposed to Bella on April 2, 2017, after they defeated The Miz and Maryse in a tag team match at Wrestlemania 33. Cena and Bella ended their engagement in April 2018 and briefly reconciled before it was revealed that they had split up again.

The wrestler-turned-actor began dating engineer Shay Shariatzadeh the following year. The couple will marry in October 2020.
