Early Life

Jesse Gregory James was born in Lynwood, California, a Los Angeles suburb, on April 19, 1969. When James was a child, his parents divorced, and he was raised by his father, Larry, an antiques dealer. James claims he had a difficult childhood marked by physical and emotional abuse from his father. “I was always afraid,” he says. “I never got to be a kid my entire childhood.”

Larry’s antique shop was next door to a Harley-Davidson parts supplier, and James had been fascinated by motorcycles since he was a child. “When I was about 6, I saw a pack of Hell’s Angels blasting by our family car, and they were all riding choppers,” James recalls. “I recall all the commotion and chrome. It was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen. I knew then that I wanted to work with motorcycles in some capacity.”

When James was seven years old, his father bought him a small dirtbike, which he loved and rode everywhere. When he wasn’t riding his bike, James demonstrated that he was a natural tinkerer. “Whether it was Legos, a pile of Tonka trucks, or his bikes, you could always find Jesse with everything laid out on the floor, tearing things apart to see if he could make them better in some way,” his father recalls.

James was a standout linebacker on the football team at La Sierra High School in Riverside, California. He graduated from high school in 1987 and enrolled at Riverside Community College, where he played football and hoped to make it from small-school ball to the NFL. However, after two injury-plagued seasons, James left the team and dropped out.

Early Career and Opening West Coast Choppers

James, a longtime supporter of the Los Angeles alternative music scene, landed a job as a bodyguard for the hard rock bands Slayer and Soundgarden. James never gave up on his dream of building motorcycles for a living, even while working full-time as a bodyguard. In his spare time, he visited custom motorcycle garages and remained convinced that the industry needed a breath of fresh air. “Back then, the custom scene was complete crap,” James said. “Nobody wanted to take the risk of creating a really wild, in-your-face motorcycle.”

James fell off the stage during a concert in 1993, dislocating his elbow and rendering him temporarily unable to work as a bodyguard. James, never one to sit still, used his time off to pursue his childhood dream of building motorcycles.

James worked as an apprentice for custom motorcycle builder Ron Simms. James then established West Coast Choppers, first in his garage and then in a small shop in Long Beach, California. Building a custom motorcycle is a time-consuming and costly process, and James struggled to make ends meet in the early days of West Coast Chopper. Due to financial difficulties, James had the words “PAY UP SUCKER!” tattooed on his palm.

Big Break

James’ fortunes improved when the Discovery Channel chose West Coast Choppers as the subject of its multi-part documentary, Motorcycle Mania, in 2001. The film thrust James into the national spotlight, where he developed a celebrity clientele that helped raise the profile of West Coast Choppers.

Since then, James has designed and built custom motorcycles for celebrities such as Tyson Beckford, Kid Rock, and Keanu Reeves. His crowning achievement is the 11 1/2-foot-long purple and gold behemoth he built for Shaquille O’Neal. James has since expanded his business beyond motorcycles to include a clothing line called West Coast Choppers, Garage magazine, and a fast food restaurant called Cisco Burger.

Following the success of Motorcycle Mania, James was hired by the Discovery Channel to host the reality show Monster Garage (2002-2006). The show followed James and his crew as they attempted to modify vehicles so that they could perform functions that their manufacturers had never imagined. In one episode, James and his company, for example, converted a school bus into a pontoon boat. James later returned to reality television in 2009, when he competed on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice on behalf of the Long Beach Education Foundation.

Personal Life

Despite his remarkable career as a custom motorcycle manufacturer and businessman, James has received more attention for his turbulent personal life than for his professional accomplishments. In 1991, James married his first wife, Karla, and they had two children, Chandler and Jesse Jr.

They divorced in 2002, and James married adult-film actress Janine Lindemulder the following year. Before divorcing in 2004, the couple had a daughter, Sunny. James married Bullock a year later. They were married until 2010, when their marriage ended in a tabloid scandal.

Shortly after Bullock won the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in The Blind Side in 2010, rumors circulated that James had extramarital affairs with model Michelle McGee, among others. James admitted to the affairs, earning public scorn for betraying the widely adored Bullock. Shortly after the news of his affairs broke, a photograph of James performing a Nazi salute surfaced, further damaging his reputation. Bullock and James divorced in June 2010.

A repentant James has worked hard to re-establish his life and career. He was treated for anger management, sex addiction, and overcoming childhood abuse at Sierra Tucson, an Arizona rehabilitation facility.

When asked what motivated his recovery in an interview, James stated, “A vision of a better life and a brighter future, if you can squint and see it, is the foundation for recovery. When I can squint and see amazing, happy kids and myself as a decent person and the person I should be, that’s when I can smile and know everything will be OK.”

Between 2010 and 2011, James had an on-again, off-again relationship with Kat Von D, and in 2013, he married drag racer Alexis DeJoria. James and DeJoria announced their divorce in March 2020.
