Early Life

Beals was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 19, 1963. Her mother is Irish American and her father is African American, and Beals has stated that she has always felt “other,” or lived outside the norm.

After appearing in her high school’s production of Fiddler on the Roof, Beals became interested in pursuing a career in acting and studied at the Goodman Theater in Chicago before attending Yale University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature in 1987.

Movies and Television Roles

‘Flashdance’

After appearing in only one minor role in the 1980 film My Bodyguard, Beals landed the lead in 1983’s Flashdance while still a student at Yale. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination and catapulted her to stardom. Many of the complicated dance scenes were performed by a double, and her audition scene features four different doubles, including one male dancer wearing a wig.

Beals returned to college after the end of Flashdance. During her summer break, she made one film, The Bride, an adaptation of Bride of Frankenstein in which she co-starred with The Police singer Sting. She did, however, turn down other acting roles, including one in St. Elmo’s Fire.

Beals’ next major film role was in the 1989 dark comedy Vampire Kiss, co-starring Nicolas Cage. She appeared in the one-season television show 2000 Malibu Road in 1992. She then spent several years primarily appearing in smaller, independent films before starring in Devil in Blue Dress with Denzel Washington in 1995.

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, she continued to work regularly in indie films as well as non-leading roles in films such as The Last Days of Disco, with Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale; The Anniversary Party, with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Alan Cumming; and Runaway Jury, with John Cusack and Gene Hackman.
