Career

Daniel was born in Los Angeles. Over the course of his career, he has worked with musicians and dancers such as Shabba Doo, Geron Casper Candidate, Derek Cooley Jackson/Jaxson, Popin’ Pete and The Electric Boogaloos. During Shalamar’s performance of “A Night to Remember” on Top of the Pops, Daniel first performed the “backslide,” a physically challenging dance move originally performed by The Lockers. Jackson, a fan of Soul Train, which featured Jeffrey Daniel as a backup dancer, performed the moonwalk almost a year later on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever TV. Jackson’s sister, La Toya, says Jackson liked Daniel’s style of dancing and set out to find him. It did not take him long to meet Daniel, hire him, and learn from him.

Daniel gives great credit to Don Campbell, who taught the “Locker” dance and was one of the first Soul Train dancers. He also acknowledges his partner on Soul Train, Cleveland Moses Jr., and Tyrone Proctor, who taught him the “Waacking” dance style. On Soul Train, Daniel, Geron “Caszper” Candidate and Derek “Cooley” Jackson/Jaxson danced the moonwalk for the first time on U.S. TV as part of a black-clad routine.

Shalamar

Shalamar was formed with Howard Hewett and Daniel’s soul-funk dance partner Jody Watley, whom he knew since she was 12 and attended the same church. “A Night to Remember,” “The Second Time Around,” “I Can Make You Feel Good,” “Friends,” “Make That Move,” “Take That to the Bank,” “There It Is,” and “I Owe You One.” with Carolyn Griffe Daniel’s ever-changing hairstyles and unique sense of style made him an icon. He often attended London clubs with bands like Bananarama, Wham, and Culture Club.

After seven years as a group, Shalamar played the Wembley Arena in 1984, and then they went their separate ways. Daniel was then cast as “Electra” in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new West End musical Starlight Express. In this role, he had to wear crazy costumes and perform complicated dance moves on roller skates.

In 1984, Daniel also appeared in Give My Regards to Broad Street by Paul McCartney. He danced to the Wings song “Silly Love Songs” in his typical robotic or puppet-like manner, with McCartney, his wife Linda McCartney, and members of the band Toto dressed as puppets. In 1985, Daniel was the host of 620 Soul Train, a British version of Soul Train that was endorsed by Don Cornelius.

Work with Michael Jackson

Since watching Daniel on Soul Train in the 1970s, Michael Jackson had been a fan of Daniel’s dance style since 1987. He was hired as co-choreographer on the “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal” videos with primary choreographer Vincent Paterson in which he also starred with his “dance brothers” Geron “Caszper” Candidate and Derek “Cooley” Jackson/Jaxson. Daniel was later employed as a creative and choreography consultant on his world tours and the video Ghosts. In addition to his role as a consultant, Daniel worked for MJJ Productions, the record label that signed Brownstone, 3T, and Men of Vizion. After leaving the United Kingdom, Daniel moved to Japan where Michael Jackson flew him back to the United States.
