Early Life

On April 28, 1950, in New Rochelle, New York, Angelo Leno, an insurance salesman, and Cathryn Leno, a homemaker, gave birth to James Douglas Muir Leno. He later relocated to Andover, Massachusetts, where he spent his childhood.

As a child, Leno demonstrated his comedic abilities through pranks and practical jokes. “If Jay spent as much time studying as he does trying to be a comedian, he’d be a big star,” his fifth-grade teacher said on his report card.

Foray Into Stand-Up and TV Writing

Leno earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in speech therapy from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1973. For extra money, Leno performed stand-up comedy in local nightclubs and emceed talent shows while in high school. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and wrote for the television show Good Times with fellow future late-night host David Letterman. In addition, Leno served as a warm-up act for Johnny Mathis and Tom Jones.

Comedy Special and Late-Night Appearances

In 1977, Leno made his first appearance on The Tonight Show and later became a regular on The Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. Show. Jay Leno and the American Dream, his first television comedy special, aired in the mid-1980s. Around the same time, he made a number of successful appearances on late-night television, most notably on Late Night with David Letterman. He signed a contract with NBC in 1987 that made him one of two permanent guest hosts of The Tonight Show, a position he soon claimed solely for himself.

Leno established himself as one of the busiest comedians, booking more than 300 appearances per year for many years. He was also known for his clean, observational sense of humour and his cartoonish facial features, which he alluded to in the title of his 1996 autobiography, Leading With My Chin.

‘The Tonight Show’ Host

Johnny Carson surprised many when he announced his retirement from his long-running role as America’s beloved and premier talk show host in 1992. Letterman, whose Late Night show followed Carson’s, had been rumored to take over hosting duties, a position he had publicly desired. NBC, on the other hand, chose the clean-cut Leno as a safer, more middle-America-friendly choice.

The transition of hosting duties to Leno did not go smoothly at first. There was a well-documented squabble between Leno and his longtime manager, Helen Kushnick, who had taken over as executive producer of the show. Kushnick reportedly threatened potential guests not to appear on other late-night talk shows if they wanted to be on The Tonight Show, in what had become a cutthroat environment in the late-night talk show world.

Kushnick was eventually fired, and the show grew in popularity and audience. Leno’s contract was extended for five years at $40 million in 1993, and two years later, he won an Emmy Award for his performance as host of The Tonight Show. His show was renewed for another five years in 1998, this time for $100 million.

‘The Jay Leno Show’ and Conan O’Brien Controversy

In 2003, Leno announced his intention to leave NBC by 2010. On The Tonight Show, Conan O’Brien of Late Night with Conan O’Brien was quickly named Leno’s heir apparent. The network announced in December 2008, just before Leno’s contract was set to expire, that his upcoming show would air in prime time. The Jay Leno Show, a new show, premiered in September 2009.

Unfortunately, Leno’s new show, which aired at 10 p.m., did not draw a large audience. The Tonight Show’s ratings dropped after O’Brien took over as host. NBC intended to move Leno’s show to late night, pushing O’Brien’s Tonight Show past midnight. When O’Brien refused to accept the scheduling change, the network decided to reinstate Leno as host of The Tonight Show.

Return to ‘The Tonight Show’

In March 2010, Leno returned to late-night television. O’Brien went on to create a rival show, Conan, for TBS.

Leno made headlines in August 2012 when he announced a pay cut. He allegedly decided to lower his salary in order to save the jobs of some of his Tonight Show coworkers. NBC had cut 20 jobs as part of a cost-cutting initiative. Around the same time, rival network ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be moved to an earlier time slot to compete with The Tonight Show.

Leno announced in April 2013 that he would leave The Tonight Show at the end of his contract the following year.

On February 6, 2014, he hosted his final Tonight Show, which featured guests Billy Crystal and Garth Brooks, as well as surprise appearances by Oprah Winfrey, Carol Burnett, Jack Black, and Kim Kardashian, among others.

Leno wished appointed successor Jimmy Fallon well in a statement released by NBC. “Jimmy, congratulations. I hope you’re as lucky as I was and can keep your job until you’re old.”

‘Jay Leno’s Garage’ and Other TV Appearances

Leno returned to touring as a stand-up comedian and performing at various charity events after leaving The Tonight Show. He soon began hosting Jay Leno’s Garage, an NBC.com web series inspired by his love of cars and motorcycles, which later became a CNBC TV series in 2015.

That same year, he appeared in a recurring role on Tim Allen’s sitcom Last Man Standing. He later appeared as a guest judge on America’s Got Talent and on the celebrity competition series Lip Sync Battle.
