Jann Wenner’s Early Life
Jann Wenner’s parents divorced in 1958, after which he and his sisters Kate and Merlyn were sent to boarding school. He graduated from Chadwick School in 1964 and later attended the University of California at Berkeley.
After leaving Berkeley in 1966, Wenner was a member of the Free Speech Movement and produced the column “Something’s Happening” in the student newspaper The Daily Californian.
Jann Wenner’s Career
In 1967 Wenner founded Rolling Stone magazine in San Francisco with his mentor, San Francisco Chronicle jazz critic Ralph J. Gleason. To start a publication, Wenner raised $7,500 from his relatives and the family of his future wife, Jane Schindelheim.
The summer after the magazine’s launch, Wenner and Schindelheim were married in a small Jewish ceremony.
With his eye for talent, Wenner launched the writing careers of Hunter S. Thompson, Joe Klein, Cameron Crowe and Joe Eszterhas. Wenner also discovered photographer Annie Leibovitz when she was 21 and studying at the San Francisco Art Institute.
In 1977, Rolling Stone moved its headquarters from San Francisco to New York. The magazine’s circulation briefly declined in the late 1970s and early 1980s because coverage of the rise of punk rock was too slow. Circulation declined again in the 1990s when the magazine lost coverage of hip-hop to Spin and Blender magazines.
Wenner and Schindelheim split in 1995, and since then her partner has been Matt Nye, a fashion designer.
