Early Career

James Cameron was born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada on August 16, 1954. As a child, he was a science-fiction fan who grew up to become one of Hollywood’s most visionary filmmakers. He studied physics at California State University, Fullerton before leaving to pursue his cinematic dreams. As a truck driver, Cameron would take breaks to write screenplays.

Cameron made his first film, a science-fiction short called Xenogenesis, in 1978. The film helped him land a job at New World Pictures, which is run by legendary B-movie director Roger Corman. Cameron worked at New World in a variety of capacities, from art director on Battle Beyond the Stars (1980) to director on Piranha II: The Spawning (1981).

Major Films

Cameron’s fortunes improved dramatically in 1984, when he wrote and directed The Terminator (1984). The film told the gripping science-fiction story of a robot from the future (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) who travels to the present day to hunt down the leader of the resistance in a battle between humans and machines that has yet to occur. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it helped Cameron land his next project, a sequel to Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), starring Sigourney Weaver as a female action hero in space. Aliens (1986) received several Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress for Weaver.

Cameron, on the other hand, encountered a number of setbacks with The Abyss (1989). The film’s shoot was exhausting. Much of it was shot on a massive underwater set, which was taxing on the cast and crew. After its initial release, critics and moviegoers were underwhelmed by the story of scuba divers who encounter aliens while recovering a US Navy submarine. The film’s visual effects, on the other hand, were stunning and won an Academy Award.

Cameron collaborated with his third wife, Kathryn Bigelow, on her 1991 action film, Point Break (1991). Their two-year relationship came to an end around the same time. Cameron returned to form the following year with another box-office success, Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The film grossed more than $200 million and set new standards for visual effects. He later married one of the film’s stars, Linda Hamilton, several years later.

‘Titanic’

Cameron wrote and directed True Lies (1994), a film about marital problems and espionage starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film was a box office success, grossing more than $378 million worldwide and earning an Oscar nomination for its visual effects. Cameron then embarked on a monumental project with Titanic, a film about star-crossed lovers (played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) trapped aboard the doomed Titanic ocean liner. Cameron had a special studio built in Mexico to recreate one of the greatest maritime disasters in history, complete with a 17-million-gallon water tank and a 775-foot replica of the Titanic.

The film cost nearly $200 million to produce and was plagued by problems and delays, and many in the industry expected it to bomb like its namesake. Cameron, on the other hand, proved the skeptics wrong. The film debuted in December 1997 to critical acclaim and strong ticket sales. Titanic was the first film to gross more than $1 billion and received 14 Academy Award nominations. Cameron won three Oscars for his work on the film: Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Picture. He divorced Linda Hamilton in 1999, and in 2000, he married Titanic actress Suzy Amis.

Cameron, who was still fascinated by the Titanic story, collaborated with his brother, Mike, to develop new technology to film the infamous ship’s undersea wreck. As a result, the 3-D IMAX documentary Ghosts of the Abyss was created (2003). In 2005, two more documentaries were released: Volcanoes of the Deep and Aliens of the Deep.

Cameron revisited his famed project in the National Geographic special Titanic: 20 Years Later with James Cameron in late 2017. The director revealed that he had made 33 dives to the wreckage site since the film’s release and was proud of how he was able to accurately portray events in the film based on the knowledge he had at the time. He also admitted that he misrepresented the Marconi Wireless Room, where the captain instructed a wireless operator to make the distress call, and his interpretation of how the massive vessel sank.

‘Avatar’

Cameron returned to feature filmmaking with 2009’s Avatar, revolutionizing the world of special effects once more. The plot revolves around the conflict between American forces and the native population of another planet. Sam Worthington plays an American soldier who switches sides to help the Na’vi people and falls in love with one of them in the film (played by Zoe Saldana).

At the box office, Avatar quickly surpassed Titanic. It also earned Cameron a slew of awards, including Best Director and Best Motion Picture – Drama Golden Globes. Avatar was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Cameron did, however, lose some of the night’s most important awards to his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow, who won Best Director and Best Picture for The Hurt Locker.

The success of Avatar has prompted Cameron to create multiple sequels, with Avatar 2 set for release in 2020.

Deepsea Challenger

Cameron traveled across the country with his Deepsea Challenger submarine in 2013. He designed the vessel to travel to the world’s deepest point, the Mariana Trench’s Challenger Deep. Cameron made several stops along the way to speak with young people about his incredible journey into the Challenger Deep. “We can inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists, and explorers by telling the story to school kids in a hands-on way,” he told the Cape Cod Today website.

Cameron donated the Deepsea Challenger to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts at the end of his historic voyage. Deepsea Challenge 3D, a documentary about his journey, was released in 2014.

Solar Power

Cameron has been working to make his production company green since the early 2010s, installing a massive array of solar panels at his studios in Manhattan Beach, California, combining his love of science and technology with environmental consciousness. He hopes that the Avatar sequels will be the first entirely solar-powered films in history.

Cameron revealed his further solar power explorations in 2015, unveiling the prototypes for his Solar Sun Flowers. The giant structures resemble their namesake and also mimic their behavior, turning to face the sun as it makes its daily arc, making it much more efficient than traditional, stationary panels, with a cluster of panels sitting atop a 30-foot “stem” surrounded by a ring of individual panels. His first installation, which is located next to a school in Malibu, California, meets the majority of the school’s energy requirements.
