Jack Hanna was born on January 2, 1947, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He grew up on his father’s farm near Knoxville and got his first job as an 11-year-old when he began working for Dr. Roberts, the family veterinarian.
When he wanted to attend high school, he chose the Kiski School in Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1965.
He then began his studies at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, graduating with a BA degree. It was there that he met his wife Suzi Egli, whom he married in 1968 and with whom he has children Kathaleen, Suzanne, and Julie.
Shortly after their marriage, they opened a pet store, Pet Kingdom, in Knoxville. In 1973, they moved to Sanford, Florida, to manage the Central Florida Zoo. They did so until 1975 when he took a break due to a serious illness in the family. In 1978, he applied for and got the job of executive director at the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium in Columbus, Ohio.
Between 1981 and 1983, Hanna hosted Hanna’s Ark on the local CBS television station WBNS. In 1983, Hanna was invited to appear on the television program Good Morning America in New York, which followed the birth of gorilla twins at the Columbus Zoo. Two years later, in 1985, he was invited to appear on Late Night with David Letterman.
The visit was a success for Jack Hanna and the Columbus Zoo, who is invited to appear on Late Show with David Letterman several times a year. On Jan. 17, 2011, he made his 80th appearance overall on Letterman’s talk show, with 54 appearances on the Late Show and 26 on Late Night, according to the Late Show newsletter. The Columbus Zoo announced in June 2020 that Hanna will retire at the end of the year.
Was Jack Hanna Involved in Animal Trading?
In August 2021, filmmakers of a documentary entitled The Conservation Game alleged that the Columbus Zoo and Hanna, its former director, had provided false information about where some animals had been acquired from or where they had been taken and that the Columbus Zoo had worked with unscrupulous private entities that may not have provided adequate animal care in some cases.
As a result, zoo officials severed ties with most of the unaccredited private facilities mentioned in the documentary. Suzi Rapp, a former employee of the zoo, defended one of the private facilities, saying that the facility’s lack of accreditation did not necessarily indicate a lack of quality.
Hannah’s family issued a statement saying they had not seen the documentary, could not speak for him, and could not question him about the matter because of his dementia.
