It can be frustrating to face the same problem over and over, but it can also lead to great inventions.

However, the following three elements must be present in order for this to occur:

The first thing to look for is a difficult-to-detect hidden problem.

Second, if you solve this frustrating problem, you will benefit many people in the future, not just yourself.

Furthermore, you should be prepared to wait a long time for your invention to be successful.

Consider Twitter’s founder, Jack Dorsey: He came up with the idea of sending friends location and activity updates via text-based broadcasts in 2000. It irritated him that such a basic and useful concept did not exist.

It was difficult to find a solution to his problem due to the lack of phone technology at the time. Smartphone sales were increasing, so he predicted his idea would eventually succeed – it would just take some time.

For his patience, he was rewarded. Six years later, the rest of the world adopted Dorsey’s solution, and Twitter went viral.

Lesson 2: Having a positive attitude will help you be more observant and can lead to easier discoveries

Do you ever have the feeling that luck is on your side? If that’s the case, you might be good at problem solving.

People who believe they are lucky, according to Richard Wiseman, a psychology professor, are more observant and better at identifying solutions.

Wiseman conducted one experiment in which he gathered people who considered themselves to be either lucky or unlucky. He gave each of them a newspaper and asked them to count the pictures in it. On the second page of the newspaper, it was written, “Stop counting – there are 43 photos in this newspaper.”

As it turned out, the lucky people were more likely to notice the message. While the unlucky ones took about two minutes to solve the problem, they found it in just a few seconds.

Super-Encounterers are people who are exceptionally perceptive.

Super-Encounterers make excellent inventors because they are not narrowly focused on a single problem. They explore when they are unsure of the solution. Having a broader perspective allows for more opportunities for discovery and creation.

In an experiment, a psychologist named Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi also observed this behavior.

He set up a room and invited students to pick out and draw objects within it as an art teacher.

Two distinct groups emerged: One chose objects and immediately began drawing with a single concept in mind. Another group of students simply picked up a book and a hat and drew them.

The other group took their time observing various objects in various ways. These students viewed things through a glass prism and opened books to view individual pages. They drew freely, discovering and exploring as a result.

Csikszentmihalyi checked in on the students seven years later and discovered that the majority of them were unable to support themselves and had given up painting. Many members of the second group, on the other hand, went on to become professional artists or teachers.

Lesson 3: Today, discoveries aren’t the result of luck but of data

Did you know that Viagra was created by accident? It’s not uncommon for scientists to make medical discoveries along paths they didn’t intend to take. Fortunately, finding something by chance is now easier than ever.

The reason for this is our digital age.

Bioinformaticians are a new type of scientist whose work is focused on “Big Data.”

Instead of waiting for a lucky break, bioinformatics researchers create their own luck by using computers and analyzing the results of thousands of previous experiments to identify hidden connections.

According to a McKinsey report from 2013, this type of research has proven to be beneficial. It’s called data mining, and it’s worth around $100 billion per year.

Data mining saves time and money by allowing computers to search through massive amounts of data instead of teams of scientists. In just one afternoon, thousands of clinical trials can be analyzed!

As you might expect, medical-industry data is massive. It has already grown to the size of a petabyte. One petabyte is equal to one million billion bytes!

With today’s data-mining algorithms, this previously unused data can be checked in record time, resulting in unexpected discoveries such as new uses for old medications.

Consider the drug imipramine. It was originally developed to treat depression, but it has since been discovered to be effective against small-cell lung cancer.

This discovery would not have been possible without the use of data mining. Researchers can now move from data analysis to clinical trials in less than two years. This happened about two years ago with imipramine.

Lesson 4: It’s possible to create something out of nothing, and it can even save lives

Did you know that Ben & Jerry’s brownies have a color code? True, and the data was generated using a brand-new algorithm.

Lawrence Herbert invented it in the 1960s while co-owning a printing company called Pantone.

At the time, Herbert was in charge of ordering inks and noticed a problem: different suppliers used different color pigments. As a result, colors would vary depending on the supplier.

Herbert had an idea while working as a printer: a universal color-coding system called Pantone that everyone could use.

Each color has a corresponding number. Pantone 123, for example, is Daffodil Yellow.

He created a sample page to demonstrate the industry’s potential. Pantone was a difficult concept to introduce, but Herbert persevered, and it eventually caught on. In the 1970s, Pantone earned more than $1 million in licensing fees.

Herbert was able to create a valuable invention out of nothing by using a piece of paper and an idea.

Such inventive magic can still be found today. The human gut has recently been discovered to be a vital organ.

Gut microbes have been discovered to play an important role in our health by researchers. If the levels of these microbes become out of balance, the consequences can be fatal, resulting in illnesses like Clostridium difficile, also known as C-diff.

This is the point at which the invention emerges from nothing. Researchers have discovered a novel way to treat C-diff patients: using healthy human feces.

Doctors can treat illnesses by infusing microbes from healthy donors’ feces into patients’ guts. An infection that would otherwise be fatal can be cured in hours using this technique.

Another example of a brilliant invention emerging from nothing demonstrates that ideas can come from anywhere.

It is not necessary to have a large budget or a team of scientists to create an amazing invention.
