Early Life

Howard Michael Mandel was born on November 29, 1955, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Mandel, the son of a lighting manufacturer and a realtor, was a class clown as a child. He was particularly fond of playing practical jokes on friends and family.

His misbehavior led to his expulsion from three high schools. Mandel began his career as a door-to-door carpet salesman after obtaining a high school equivalency diploma. He was good at his job and grew the company to a successful retail operation with two locations. However, during a business trip to Los Angeles in 1979, his life was forever changed. Mandel decided to test his comedic abilities at the Comedy Store’s amateur night. He performed well enough to catch the attention of a television producer, who hired him to appear on the comedy game show Make Me Laugh.

TV Shows

‘St. Elsewhere’

More offers for the rising comedic star came soon after. He opened for singer and performer Diana Ross’ Las Vegas show before landing a role on the critically acclaimed drama St. Elsewhere. The series premiered in 1982 and was set at St. Eligius, a rundown urban hospital. It was one of the first shows to depict medical cases and procedures in a realistic, gritty manner. Mandel starred in the series as eccentric emergency room doctor Wayne Fiscus, alongside William Daniels, Ed Begley Jr., Denzel Washington, and David Morse.

Mandel continued to do stand-up comedy and voiceover work while working on St. Elsewhere. In the hit film Gremlins (1984) and its sequel Gremlins II: The New Batch), he voiced the creature Gizmo (1990). Mandel also provided voices for several characters in the Muppet Babies animated children’s show.

‘Bobby’s World’

Mandel dabbled in sitcoms shortly after the end of St. Elsewhere in 1988. His first comedic role was in Good Grief! as a con man who ran a funeral home. The show only lasted one season before being cancelled in 1991. Mandel found greater success in the world of children’s television around the same time. From 1990 to 1998, he created the popular animated series Bobby’s World. Mandel, who also served as the show’s writer and executive producer, voiced several characters, including Bobby, an imaginative and inventive four-year-old who has all sorts of adventures.

Mandel embarked on a new career as a television talk show host in 1997. The Howie Mandel Show received mixed reviews from critics but lasted two seasons before being cancelled in 1999. Hidden Howie: The Private Life of a Public Nuisance, his next television project, aired on the Bravo cable network and featured his love of pranks. The show alternated between video segments of Mandel on hidden camera annoying ordinary people and comedic scenes based on his own life.

‘Deal or No Deal’

Mandel took over as the host of the hit game show Deal or No Deal in December 2005. The show gave contestants the chance to win $1 million based on which suitcases they chose. In 2006, Mandel told People magazine, “Their decisions may ultimately change their lives. It’s heartbreaking… I really want them to win. But I’m not sure which case is which. All I can do is point out their disadvantages.”

Deal or No Deal aired several nights a week on primetime television for a time; it aired through 2009, but continued in syndication for a few more seasons. Mandel received his first Emmy Award nomination for his work on the show in 2008.

In 2018, it was announced that the hit show would be revived for another season, with Mandel serving as host and executive producer.
