Although the acting profession is creatively rich, its professionals may not be financially wealthy. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for actors is so irregular that no customary annual income could be calculated because the profession is so irregular.

Average Salaries

According to the BLS, actors earned an average hourly wage of $39.84 in 2016. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned $9.39 per hour, while the highest-paid 10 percent earned over $100 per hour. They made a mean wage of $50.88 per hour in the motion picture and video industries. Independent actors earned $44.46 per hour on average.

Movie Salaries

SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) defines the starting wages of movie actors. It is up to artists and production companies to decide on compensation that is higher than these minimums. The average daily wage for performers hired for the day was $933 as of July 2016. 

Singing on and off camera has a daily minimum of $1,010 for solos and duos, but $886 for groups of three to eight. The actors hired for the week earned $3,239 in pay. Non-singing actors also receive the same amounts as soloists and duos.

TV Salaries

There was no difference in pay between actors in television and movie roles except when given a “major role.” 

Someone who was granted a credit at the front of the show with the designation “Guest Star,” “Special Guest Star,” “Starring,” or “Special Appearance By.” 

Their half-hour shows brought in $5,132 per week, and their one-hour shows brought in $8,210 per week. Ten to 19-week employees made $2,780 per week, while 20-week and longer employees made $2,314 per week. Three-day rate actors also appeared in television. The performers who sang on half-hour or full-hour shows received $2,363 regardless of whether they sang.

Theater Salaries

The Actors Equity Association set the minimum wage for stage actors and negotiated contracts depending on the location and type of performance. As of June 2016, the minimum salary for an actor on Broadway, where stages represent the pinnacle of the profession, ranged between $236 and $684 a week. In Chicago area theaters, actors earned between $246.25 and $886.50 a week as of June 2017.
