Halston, an American fashion designer, was born on April 23, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa. Halston was born Roy Halston Frowick, the son of a Norwegian-American accountant and his wife. He eventually dropped his first and last names in favor of the moniker.
Halston enjoyed altering and sewing clothes for his mother and sister as a child. He attended Indiana University before moving on to the Art Institute of Chicago. He worked as a fashion merchandiser at the upscale chain department store Carson Pirie Scott while attending night classes at the Art Institute.
Soon after, he met André Basil, a prestigious hairdresser who owned a salon at the Ambassador Hotel. Basil, moved by both the man and his work, installed a display of Halston’s hats in his salon.
When Basil opened his Boulevard Salon on North Michigan Avenue, he gave Halston half of the display space. Their personal relationship ended in 1959, and Halston relocated to New York to work as a designer for renowned milliner Lily Daché.
Halston’s hat designs combined the fantastic with whimsy, using a variety of jewels, flowers, and fringe to embellish hoods, bonnets, and coifs. He was hired as the head milliner for the luxury retailer Bergdorf Goodman within a year.
Jacqueline Kennedy made his work famous when she wore a pillbox hat designed by him to her husband’s presidential inauguration in 1961. Some of the most beautiful and well-known women in the world became Halston’s friends and clients, including Rita Hayworth, Liza Minnelli, Marlene Dietrich, and Diana Vreeland.
In 1966, Halston began designing women’s wear, providing the ideal look for the international jet set of the time. His collection was known for sexy yet elegant pieces. In the fall of 1972, he debuted a simple shirtwaist dress made of “Ultra suede,” a washable, durable, and beautiful fabric.
Two years later, he introduced the world to his most recognizable design, the halter dress. It was an instant hit in the discotheques of America, giving women a narrow, elongated silhouette. The look was completed by Halston’s signature sunglasses, which were worn both day and night.
Halston was the first designer to fully license himself as a brand unto himself; his influence extended beyond style to reshape the fashion business.
He created designs that were affordable to women of all income levels through a licensing agreement with JC Penney. He also had an impact on uniform design, changing the overall look of Braniff International Airways’ staff uniforms.
Personal Life and Death
Despite his accomplishments, his increasing drug use and inability to meet deadlines hampered his success. He was fired from his own company in 1984, and he lost the right to design and sell clothes under his own name.
He did, however, continue to create costumes for friends Liza Minnelli and Martha Graham. He was a long-time and pivotal figure in New York’s Studio 54 disco’s nightlife scene. In 1990, he died in San Francisco, California, of lung cancer and AIDS complications.
