Profile

Actor, musician, and tap dancer Born in New York City on February 14, 1946. Hines became involved in show business at a young age, growing up as a member of Hines, Hines, and Dad with his father and older brothers. He studied tap dance with master tap dancer Henry Le Tang and spent much of his early career dancing at the Apollo Theater, learning from performers such as the Nicholas Brothers and Sandman Sims.

In 1973, he left Hines, Hines, and Dad to form Severance, a jazz-rock band. However, the silky-smooth tap dancer quickly returned to New York, where he launched a distinguished Broadway career that earned him a Tony award in 1992 for the lead role in George C. Wolfe’s musical tribute Jelly’s Last Jam.

As a last-minute replacement for an ailing Richard Pryor, Hines landed his first film role as a Roman slave in Mel Brooks‘ History of the World-Part 1 in 1981. That role was a stepping stone in Hines’ film career, and he went on to star in a variety of films, including 1984’s The Cotton Club and White Nights the following year, opposite Mikhail Baryshnikov. He also demonstrated his comedic timing in films such as Renaissance Man in 1994. He made his directorial debut the same year with Bleeding Hearts.

Hines released an album titled Gregory Hines in 1987. He also appeared in the CBS sitcom The Gregory Hines Show, in which he played a single father struggling to reenter the dating scene.

Hines and his first wife, Patricia Panella, have a daughter named Daria. With his second wife, Pamela Koslow, he has a son Zachary and a stepdaughter Jessica.

Gregory Hines, 57, died of cancer on August 9, 2003 in Los Angeles.
