Early Life

Gordon James Ramsay was born on Nov. 8, 1966, in Johnstone, Scotland, and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, where he moved with his family at age 5. Ramsay’s first love was soccer, and he aspired to a career as a professional athlete. At the age of 15, the talented Ramsay joined Glasgow Rangers, a professional club.

He played for the team for three years until 1985, when a knee injury ended his career prematurely. Ramsay was forced to start over and went back to school, earning a degree in hotel management in 1987.

Top Chef And Entrepreneur

After completing his studies, Ramsay went under the tutelage of some of Europe’s top chefs. He apprenticed with Marco Pierre White at Harvey’s in London, worked for Albert Roux at Le Gavroche, and then with master chefs Joel Robuchon and Guy Savoy in France.

In 1993, Ramsay struck out on his own as head chef of the newly opened Aubergine in London, where he earned the restaurant a two-star Michelin rating over the course of three years. More personal prestige followed in 1995, when Ramsay was named Newcomer of the Year at the prestigious Catey Awards, an Oscar-like event for the restaurant and hospitality industry.

When the restaurant’s financial backing faltered, Ramsay left Aubergine and opened his own restaurant, Gordon Ramsay, in London in 1998. The restaurant was hailed as a destination for foodies and eventually received a three-star rating from Michelin.

The next few years proved to be a whirlwind for the ambitious, hard-working and spirited Ramsay. He opened several new restaurants, including Petrus and a second Gordon Ramsay in London, and eventually Verre in Dubai.

Ramsay, who was named Chef of the Year at the 2000 Catey Awards and Independent Restaurateur of the Year in 2006, brought his restaurant business to the U.S. in 2006 with the opening of two locations at The London NYC. Since then, the celebrity chef has expanded his reach around the globe, taking his brand to countries such as South Africa, Australia and Canada.

Television Star

Ramsay’s path to television began in 1996 with his appearance as a judge on the BBC cooking show MasterChef. In 1999, he was the focus of a British documentary miniseries, Boiling Point, which followed his working life as he opened his first restaurant. The success of this documentary led to another miniseries, Beyond Boiling Point, in 2000.

In the spring of 2004, Ramsey was hired to host two shows: Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, in which he attempted to turn around failing restaurants, and Hell’s Kitchen, in which he hosted a cooking competition with 10 celebrities in which viewers voted on the contestants.

With reality television in full bloom in the U.S., the time was ripe for Ramsay to cross the Atlantic. In May 2005, an American version of Hell’s Kitchen debuted on FOX, with aspiring restaurateurs under the stern gaze of the show’s host. Like British viewers, American viewers learned to love and hate the gruff chef as he whittled down the field of contestants to a final winner. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, he launched another culinary series, The F Word.

Ramsay’s strong ratings in the U.S. paved the way for an adaptation of Kitchen Nightmares, which premiered in September 2007. This in turn led to the U.S. productions of MasterChef (2010) and MasterChef Junior (2013), in which Ramsay led the judging panel. In 2012, he added another show to his schedule, Hotel Hell, a variation on his theme of “Saving a Failing Local.”

Outside The Kitchen

In addition to his work at TV and in his restaurants, Ramsay has written more than 20 books. His various businesses have been combined into Gordon Ramsay Holdings Limited.

For his impressive track record, Ramsay was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2006. In 2013, he was inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame.

Ramsay married Cayetana Elizabeth “Tana” Hutcheson, a teacher, in 1996. They have five children, Megan, twins Holly and Jack, Matilda and Oscar.

In 2014, the couple established the Gordon and Tana Ramsay Foundation to support Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
