Early Life

Giovanni Giorgio Moroder was born in Ortisei, Italy, on April 26, 1940. There is little information available about his parents or other family members. It is known, however, that they ran an inn in the small town of Ortisei and had three other children.

Unlike his siblings, who were interested in painting and sculpture, Giorgio showed an early interest in music. He bought his first guitar when he was 15 and soon asked his parents for permission to pursue music instead of regular schooling.

For years, he sang and played music in odd places like restaurants, coffee shops, and discotheques. In the ballrooms, he played bass. He spent the majority of the early 1960s touring Europe with various music bands. He eventually settled in Germany in the late 1960s.

Career

Giorgio spent his time in Germany playing music at the Scotch-Club in Aachen, the country’s first discotheque. Later, he relocated to Berlin, where he wrote and sang singles in German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

His first big break came when he moved to Munich in 1969. He wrote and performed the song ‘Looky Looky’ there. The song sold over a million copies, earning him his first gold disc.

In 1970, he founded Oasis Records, a record label that he ran for a decade. Later, it merged with Casablanca Records, an American record label.

After dabbling in music production, Giorgio co-wrote the song ‘Son of my Father,’ which was performed by the UK pop group Chicory tip. In 1972, this song was the number one hit in the United Kingdom.

Giorgio created some of his best work in the mid-1970s. In 1977, his album ‘From Here to Eternity’ became a big chartbuster, with three of its songs reaching number two on the Billboard charts. In the same year, he collaborated with American disco queen Donna Summer, co-writing and producing the hit single ‘I Feel Love.’

He wrote the Oscar-winning soundtrack ‘Chase’ for the film Midnight Express in 1978. It was a disco instrumental that later became a maxi single. This track, along with ‘I Feel Love,’ is regarded as the precursor to the untempo disco genre, more specifically Hi-NRG.

Giorgio composed and produced numerous albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s, both as singles and in collaboration with singers such as Donna Summer, Cher, and David Bowie. ‘E= MC2’, his 1979 album, was the first to use digital recording techniques. At the same time, he wrote the soundtracks for the films Foxes and American Gigolo.

Moroder restored and re-released the silent-era film ‘Metropolis’ in 1984. He accomplished this by providing the film with a pop soundtrack performed by himself and a number of other artists. The film received a mixed reaction upon its initial release. In the same year, he wrote the title track for the film ‘Electric Dreams.’

Moroder spent the latter half of the 1980s writing and composing music for films such as ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Over the Top.’ He wrote the theme songs for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the 1988 Seoul Olympics, and the FIFA World Cup (1990).

Giorgio took a two-decade break from creating album music after the release of his album ‘Forever Dancing’ in 1992. During this time, he was primarily concerned with remixes, despite having composed the soundtrack for the documentary film ‘Impressionen unter Wasser’.

Giorgio returned to composing in 2012, creating the theme soundtrack for Google’s Racer, and later collaborated with French electronic music group Daft Punk on their album ‘Random Access Memory.’ This album contains the song ‘Giorgio by Moroder,’ which includes a monologue by Moroder himself.

Giorgio has toured extensively in recent years, performing originals from the 1970s and 1980s as well as remixes. Volkswagen used his reworked 1960’s classic ‘Doo Bee Doo’ for a Super Bowl commercial in 2014.

In 2015, he released ‘Déjà Vu,’ a solo album in collaboration with several artists such as Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, and Matthew Koma, and in 2016, he performed live for a Korean band.
