Early Life

Gilda Susan Radner, a comedian and actress, was born on June 28, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan. Radner was born into a wealthy Jewish family, but her childhood was not without difficulties. Her mother despised winter in Detroit, so she sent Radner away from school for several months each year. This relocation disrupted her studies and made it difficult for her to make friends. Growing up, Radner was also teased for being overweight.

Radner grew closer to her father by accompanying him to see theatrical productions in Detroit. It was just one of the ways he encouraged her desire to perform. Unfortunately, her father died when she was only in her early teens.

Working with Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi

Radner attended the University of Michigan after graduating from high school. She studied theater there, but she never graduated. Radner instead relocated to Toronto. She eventually joined the renowned Toronto-based comedy troupe Second City, where she performed alongside Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi.

Along with Belushi, Radner relocated to New York City to work on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. They also appeared on stage together in The National Lampoon Show. Radner and Belushi would continue to work together on their next major project, Saturday Night Live.

Producer Lorne Michaels chose Radner to join the cast of Saturday Night Live, a new late-night comedy show that premiered in 1975. The show introduced television viewers to a new generation of comic talents, including Radner, Belushi, and Bill Murray. Radner remained on the show for five years, creating iconic characters such as Roseanne Rosannadanna, the annoying newswoman, and Baba Wawa, a parody of Barbara Walters.

Gene Wilder

Radner attempted a film career after leaving Saturday Night Live. She co-starred with Bob Newhart in the political comedy First Family (1980). She met actor Gene Wilder on her next film project, Hanky Panky (1982). The movie may have been a flop, but its two leads had chemistry. Radner was married to musician G.E. Smith at the time, but the couple divorced soon after. She married Wilder in the south of France in September 1984.

Death & Legacy

Before her death, Radner only made a few more films. In 1986, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Radner battled this disease for several years, facing her greatest challenge with humor. It’s Always Something, a book she wrote about her life and experiences, was published in 1989. She passed away on May 20, the same year, in Los Angeles, California. In her honor, Gilda’s Club, a center for social and emotional support for cancer patients, their families, and friends, was founded.

Love, Gilda, a documentary, was released in September 2018. The film, directed by Lisa D’Apolito, explores the comedienne’s early childhood, iconic career, and battle with cancer through never-before-heard or seen audio, journals, home movies, and interviews.
