Gigi Hadid, who stands 5 feet 10 inches tall, began modeling when she was two years old. Hadid was born in 1995, the daughter of model Yolanda Hadid, a former Real Housewife of Beverly Hills star. At Malibu High School, she focused on competitive horseback riding and volleyball before returning to modeling at the age of 17.

Hadid has since collaborated with a variety of brands, including Tom Ford and Versace, as well as Reebok and Victoria’s Secret. She has continued her success by appearing on the covers of international fashion magazines and on the runways of every major fashion week.

Early Life and Education

Jelena Noura Hadid was born on April 23, 1995 in Los Angeles and raised in nearby Santa Barbara, where horseback riding became her first passion. Her mother, former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Hadid, was a renowned Dutch model herself, so modeling was in her blood. (Her father is Mohamed Hadid, a Palestinian-American real estate developer.) She has stated that her modeling career began when she was “about two years old,” after being discovered by Guess co-founder and family friend Paul Marciano.

After posing for Baby Guess, Guess Kids, and finally Guess, Hadid stepped away from modeling to pursue competitive horseback riding and club volleyball. She became captain of the varsity volleyball team at Malibu High School (where she graduated in 2013) in order to “have a normal childhood and go to high school,” and she even went to Junior Olympic qualifiers for volleyball.

She moved to the East Coast in the fall of 2013 after graduating from high school to study criminal psychology at the New School in New York City. However, because she signed her first professional contract with IMG Models the same year, her modeling gigs interfered with her class schedule, and she eventually dropped out.

Siblings

Hadid has two younger siblings: Bella, a sister, and Anwar, a brother. Both, like their older sister, are models.

The Hadid sisters have walked in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, starred in Fendi and Moschino’s Spring/Summer 2017 campaigns, and became the first siblings to be named to Forbes’ World’s Highest Paid Models list in 2017.

Gigi has said that Bella, who famously dated singer The Weeknd, was a source of strength for her. “She’s so understanding of the demands of this job,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “It’s really great that I can talk to her about it.” “Because I often feel suffocated by my own work ethic and the expectations I place on myself.” It’s wonderful to have people who tell you, ‘It’s okay to take time for yourself.'”

Along with two older paternal half-sisters (Marielle and Alana), Hadid had five stepsisters from her mother’s marriage to music producer David Foster, including Erin and Sara Foster, stars of VH1’s Barely Famous.

She was named Tommy Hilfiger’s global brand ambassador in 2016, and she later collaborated with the designer on a capsule collection, which she debuted at New York Fashion Week that fall. She began walking in runway shows for Versace, Chanel, Elie Saab, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Anna Sui, Miu Miu, Balmain, and Diane Von Furstenberg that same year.

Hadid later launched a boot collection with Stuart Weitzman and was named a Reebok brand ambassador. She was named International Model of the Year by the British Fashion Awards and Daily Front Row’s Model of the Year.

TV and Film Appearances

Hadid’s first acting experience came in 2012, when she appeared in a short film called Virgin Eyes as part of her American Film Institute conservatory thesis project.

Her next “short film” role came in 2014, when she played Slay-Z in Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video. She directed DNCE’s 2015 “Cake by the Ocean” video, as well as appearing in music videos with Miguel, Calvin Harris, Simpson, Jonas, and Malik.

Between 2012 and 2016, Hadid appeared on Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alongside her mother Yolanda. Following her Housewives appearances, she expanded her reality show resume by appearing on Masterchef, Lip Sync Battle, and RuPaul’s Drag Race as a guest judge. She also co-hosted the American Music Awards in November 2016 with Saturday Night Live alum Jay Pharaoh, and she later starred as herself in the 2018 ensemble heist comedy Ocean’s 8.

Health Problems

In February 2018, while responding to social media trolls who were body-shaming her for being too thin, Hadid revealed she has Hashimoto’s disease, an autoimmune thyroid disorder. “For those of you so determined to figure out why my body has changed over the years, you may not know that when I started at 17, I was not yet diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease; those of you who called me ‘too big for the industry’ were seeing inflammation and water retention as a result of that,” she tweeted.

“I will not further explain the way my body looks, just as anyone, with a body type that doesn’t suit your ‘beauty’ expectation, shouldn’t have to,” Hadid wrote, adding that she’s since been “properly medicated” and was also “part of a holistic medical trial that helped my thyroid levels balance out.”

Personal Life

Following her relationships with singers Cody Simpson and Joe Jonas, Hadid was first linked to former One Direction boy bander Zayn Malik in November 2015. Malik later recounted their November meeting at a Victoria’s Secret party in New York City, saying he was the one who approached the model and asked her out to Gemma at The Bowery Hotel for their first date. In interviews, he has also described her as “a very intelligent woman,” “classy,” “confident,” and “cool.”

Following their appearance in Malik’s steamy “Pillowtalk” music video in February 2016, the couple reunited for their first joint photo shoot as a couple for Vogue in April. Hadid photographed her boyfriend for Versus Versace’s spring 2017 campaign, and they also appeared in a couple photo shoot for Vogue’s August 2017 cover story.

The couple, who had attended several high-profile events together, including the Met Gala and London Fashion Week, announced their split on Twitter on March 13, 2018, but were reunited the following summer.

Malik and Hadid were reported to be expecting their first child together in April 2020. Khai, their daughter, was born in September.

Modeling Career Highlights

Hadid made her New York Fashion Week debut in February 2014, walking in Desigual’s runway show, but she credits her big break to French fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, who put her on the cover of her spring 2014 CR Fashion Book.

In July 2014, she co-starred in Tom Ford’s Eyewear autumn/winter campaign with Patrick Schwarzenegger, before going on to star in other fashion and fragrance campaigns for the designer later that year. Maybelline had also appointed her as a brand ambassador by January 2015.

Her first appearance on the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show runway in December 2015 came after two failed auditions to be an Angel. Hadid previously told Vogue that after the first rejection, she felt too nervous and lacked self-confidence to succeed. She earned her Victoria’s Secret wings while appearing in the show for the second time the following year.
