What Does “Finger Lickin’ Good” Mean?
It is an expression of praise for good food to say finger lickin’ good (formally “finger licking good”).
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), a fast food restaurant founded in 1930, is the source of this phrase. Fast food restaurants often have slogans that make them easier to remember. In 1956, KFC had the slogan, “Finger lickin’ good.”
According to this slogan, KFC’s food can be eaten with only your hands. One’s fingers still have salt and flavoring on them after finishing a meal. As a result, a person might clean them by licking them instead of washing them.
KFC has had different slogans over the years. One of them was “Nobody does chicken like KFC.”. Another was “so good”. Even so, none of their other slogans has gained as much traction as “finger lickin’ good.”
Although KFC’s “finger lickin’ good” slogan has been popular for more than 50 years, it was dropped in 2011 for another tagline – “so good”.

How Was The “Finger Lickin’ Good” Slogan Created?
A restaurant manager in the 1950s came up with KFC’s ‘It’s Finger Lickin’ Good’ off the top of his head. KFC founder Harland Sanders ran a service station in Corbin, Kentucky, in the 1930s, serving food to hungry travellers.
As his cooking gained fame, he was made a Kentucky Colonel (the highest honor the state can bestow) in 1935 by governor Ruby Laffoon to acknowledge his contribution to cuisine.
Sanders moved his operation to the other side of the road to increase capacity when more people started coming in just to eat.
KFC still uses the secret blend of herbs and spices he developed in the early 1950s. It was also a franchisee from Phoenix, Dave Harman, who came up with the company’s famous phrase when he was contemplating franchising.
As Harman voiced TV commercials for his restaurant between movies, his restaurant manager, Ken Harbough, stepped in to do the ads since he was unable to speak clearly after a stroke. Harman still wanted to be in the ads, so he would accompany Harbough to the TV station, where he would eat chicken while Harbough filmed.
After one of the ads was aired, an angry woman called the TV station to complain that Harbough was licking his fingers.”
According to the story, Harbough spontaneously responded, “Well, it’s finger lickin’ good”.
Almost immediately, the slogan appeared alongside an illustrated portrait of Colonel Sanders. The phrase and Sanders’ image have since become synonymous with the franchise.
KFC announced in February 2011 that it would swap ‘It’s Finger Lickin’ Good’ for ‘So Good’. We have used ‘So Good’ more than just as a tagline to shape our plans to become a better business, focusing not just on our food, but also on how we engage with our employees, and our efforts in the community,” says a KFC spokesperson.
This is understandable, but it’s also a shame to lose something so distinctive for something so bland.

How Did The “Finger Lickin’ Good” Campaign Work?
After paused advertising of the iconic 64-year-old slogan “Finger Lickin’ Good” in August 2020 due to the outbreak of COVID-19, KFC is bringing its “Finger Lickin’ Good” slogan back. The company said then that the slogan didn’t “feel quite right” given the pandemic situation in 2020. At the time, Catherine Tan-Gillespie, global chief marketing officer at KFC, said the company’s slogan didn’t quite fit the environment.
As part of its resurfacing campaign, KFC launched a YouTube video that featured customers dressed in KFC costumes, getting tattooed with KFC symbols, and even proposing to their partners in a KFC outlet. KFC says “Love you too” to viewers at the end of the video.
According to MARKETING-INTERACTIVE, however, in Singapore, the brand has been using the phrase, “Finger Licking Good,” in its campaigns’ sign-offs since 2020, when Phase 2, the phase following COVID-19 in Singapore, was introduced.
Its tagline is “Now it feels Finger Licking Good”, which emphasizes the emotive feeling consumers get from KFC instead of focusing on licking their fingers.
For Mother’s Day this year, KFC Singapore partnered with personal care brand Walch. For every KFC Celebration Feast purchased, Walch offered a free Walch speed foaming automatic hand wash to shower mothers with TLC (tender loving chicken and tender loving care).
In order to promote the campaign, KFC relies on online advertising and content push, as well as communications at its restaurants. During the campaign, KFC will create awareness and drive sales.
KFC also held a Mother’s Day social media contest on Facebook and Instagram for its fans, encouraging them to share one memorable moment they had with their mother that means a lot to them and explain why.
The fast food chain is offering a KFC Celebration Feast, a Walch automatic handwash, and a chicken bouquet to winners.

In marketing, slogans have long been used, but today they are everywhere, used by a variety of brands.
Good slogans should highlight the benefits of a product. A memorable slogan will also emphasize the brand’s image.
In general, a phrase that has meaning resonates more strongly with customers than a brand’s name alone, because a good slogan provides more than an assurance of commitment, but also explains what the brand stands for.
In marketing, slogans are important for the following reasons:
Brand positioning and recognition
Brand identity is determined by a distinctive logo, a memorable slogan, and the brand name.

As a connection between a business and its related customers, slogans have always been treasured throughout history.
Advertising slogans help brands be remembered by their audiences, which, in turn, results in a positive attitude toward them.
Stand out from the crowd
A brand’s slogan should be distinctive. That way, people will remember your brand.
By mentioning the slogan, your brand can be identified without mentioning the product or brand name.
Make your product more popular
A slogan can not only tell the audience about the product, but also about its advantages.
A slogan describes the way people view a product. A slogan can therefore be used as a marketing strategy to enhance the appeal of your product.
