Early Life

Erin Pattee was born on June 22, 1960, in Lawrence, Kansas. She grew up in a close-knit middle-class family as the youngest of four children. Her father was a mechanical engineer, and her mother was a writer.

Erin, who was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, was a poor student. Brockovich attended Kansas State University for a short time after graduating from high school in 1978 before transferring to Miss Wade’s Fashion Merchandising College (now Wade College) in Dallas, Texas, where she earned an associate’s degree in applied arts in 1980.

Brockovich moved to Newport Beach, California, with a friend after finishing her degree. After briefly working as a management trainee at Kmart, she quit in 1981 to compete in and win the Miss Pacific Coast beauty pageant.

Around this time, she met her first husband, Shawn Brown, whom she married in April 1982. Brockovich gave birth to two children, Matthew and Katie, while the young couple moved around the country for the next few years. Their marriage, however, eventually fell apart, and they divorced in 1987.

Erin, now a single mother, found work as an assistant at a brokerage firm in Reno, Nevada, where she met Steve Brockovich. They married in 1989 but divorced a year later, when Brockovich discovered she was pregnant with her third child, Elizabeth. The events that followed would pave the way for her eventual celebrity.

Hinkley and Hollywood

Brockovich was involved in a serious car accident shortly after her divorce, necessitating neck surgery. She then relocated to the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, where she was referred by a friend to the law firm Masry & Vititoe, which she hired to represent her in her accident case.

Brokovich was eventually awarded a small settlement, but it was insufficient to support her family. Attorney Ed Masry offered her a clerical job at the firm in 1992, feeling sorry for her.

Brockovich noticed blood samples in the paperwork for a real estate case involving the utility giant Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) one day while filing documents. Her suspicions aroused, she asked Masry for permission to investigate further. Brockovich eventually discovered evidence linking a rash of illnesses in Hinkley, California, to high levels of hexavalent chromium found in the drinking water during subsequent visits.

When the pollution was eventually traced back to the PG&E compressor station in Hinkley, more than 600 residents hired Masry & Vititoe to represent them in 1993.

After evidence emerged during the trial that suggested PG&E was aware of and attempted to conceal the pollution, the case was settled in 1996 for $333 million, the largest settlement in US history for a case of its kind.

Brockovich was paid $2.5 million for her role in bringing the case to the firm. However, the case’s publicity brought Brockovich to the attention of Danny DeVito’s production company, Jersey Films, which purchased the rights to Brockovich’s story in 1995. Brockovich later married Eric Ellis in 1999, and the couple divorced more than a decade later.

Movie Starring Julia Roberts

Erin Brockovich, released in 2000, stars Julia Roberts as Brockovich and Albert Finney as Masry in a mostly accurate account of the Hinkley case. It also includes a cameo by Brockovich, who appears briefly as a waitress.

The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing more than $250 million globally and earning multiple Academy Award nominations. Roberts was named Best Actress for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich.
