Early Life and Family

Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995, in London, England. In 1992, Lipa’s parents, Dukagjin and Anessa, fled Pristina in Kosovo to escape the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. As Kosovo Albanians, they were targeted by Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.

Lipa’s parents arrived in London as refugees. Although both were students (Lipa’s father was studying dentistry and her mother law), they worked in restaurants to make ends meet in their new home. In 1995, Lipa was born.

Lipa wrote her first song at the age of four. She had family connections to music – in addition to his dental studies, her father had played in a rock band. “My father was a musician, and there was always music playing in the house, so that always had a big influence on me,” she told in an interview. She grew up listening to musicians like Blondie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Sting and Pink.

In 2006, Lipa’s parents thought it was safe enough to return to their home country. They brought 11-year-old Lipa and her younger siblings, sister Rina and brother Gjin, back to Kosovo.

Although Lipa had grown up speaking Albanian at home, the move revealed that her language skills were not good enough to succeed in school. Over time, however, her Albanian improved. She managed to make friends who told her about the war in Kosovo while her family was in London. Kosovo’s hip-hop-dominated music scene also introduced Lipa to new music.

At 15, Lipa returned to London, where she moved in with a family friend. She got her parents to support the move because it would benefit her education. Her real goal, however, was to become a singer; a music career would not have been possible in Kosovo. She told CBS News in 2020, “I wanted to do music, but I wanted to do it on a global level. I have to go back to where everything is happening.”

Early Career and ‘Dua Lipa’

In London, Lipa studied at the Sylvia Young Theater School, which she’d attended before her family moved to Kosovo. She also posted song covers on YouTube to attract attention. “Deep down, I wanted to have that Justin Bieber effect where someone finds me on YouTube,” she said in a 2020 interview.

Lipa made money working in a restaurant. She also signed with a modeling agency because she believed it could boost her career. However, since she wasn’t interested in losing weight as the agency wanted, only a few jobs came up.

Lipa continued to focus on music and shared songs on SoundCloud. Although she didn’t appear on the reality show X-Factor, she sang in a commercial for the show. In time, Lipa was offered a music publishing contract, which set off a chain of events. Lipa approached a lawyer for advice about the contract. The lawyer put her in touch with a manager who also managed Lana Del Rey. Lipa eventually signed with that manager.

In 2015, Lipa received a recording contract. Her first single, “New Love,” was released that year. More songs followed, but her self-titled album didn’t come out until 2017. The singles from that album had only moderate success until “New Rules” was released. The video for this blockbuster hit has been viewed more than two billion times on YouTube. Another single from the album, “IDGAF,” went platinum.

The growing fame brought Lipa some setbacks, such as criticism of her lackluster choreography in 2018, but she took the comments in stride and used them as an incentive for dance training sessions.

Growing Success and ‘Future Nostalgia’

At the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019, Lipa was named Best New Artist. She also won a second Grammy this year: Best Dance Recording for “Electricity.”

Lipa’s second album, “Future Nostalgia,” was more personal than her debut. She had come up with the title in Las Vegas, and all the songs on the album were penned by her. In early March 2020, Lipa was preparing for the release of Future Nostalgia. Then the album was released on the Internet when the world came to a standstill because of the pandemic COVID -19. Many other artists put their work on hold, but Lipa decided to release Future Nostalgia a week early.

Faced with the global crisis, Lipa was unsure whether to continue releasing the album, even though the leak had put her in a difficult position. Fortunately, her work was accepted by listeners. While Lipa had described her earlier songs as “dark pop,” this album was more danceable. The tracks showed a connection to the music of the 1970s, 80s and 90s, but also had a current touch.

Lipa became the top of the Spotify listening chart the week her album was released. With 2020 tours off the table, Lipa live-streamed a concert in November titled Studio 2054, which featured Kylie Minogue, Bad Bunny and John as guests. More than 5 million people watched the stream, setting a record for paid views.

Lipa received six nominations for the 63rd Grammy Awards. Future Nostalgia won in the Best Pop Vocal Album category.
