Early Years and Career

Dr. Phil is a life coach and television host who was born Phillip Calvin McGraw on September 1, 1950, in Vinita, Oklahoma. Dr. Phil grew up in both Oklahoma and Texas. He developed into a 6’4″ linebacker and received a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa before completing his undergraduate studies in 1975 at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

McGraw received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of North Texas four years later. Dr. Phil founded his practice in 1979 with his father, who had earned his psychology degree after working as an oil rig equipment supplier.

Recognizing that one-on-one therapy was not for him, McGraw quickly launched Pathways, a popular self-motivation seminar. He established the Courtroom Sciences company in 1989. The venture assisted trial lawyers in developing cases through mock trials, behavioral analysis, jury selection, and mediation.

Meeting Oprah

Dr. Phil met Oprah Winfrey through Courtroom Sciences. She was sued in 1996 by cattlemen who claimed she defamed the beef industry on one of her shows, and she hired Dr. Phil to help her during the trial.

Dr. Phil became a regular expert on Oprah after assisting her in winning the case in 1998. He discussed life strategies and relationships. The plain-spoken doctor delivered common sense advice rather than self-help jargon, his demeanor making him someone even tough guys felt comfortable learning from.

‘Dr. Phil’

Dr. Phil, his own nationally syndicated series, premiered in the fall of 2002. The one-hour talk show had the highest ratings of any new syndicated program since The Oprah Winfrey Show debuted 16 years earlier, and it received more than two dozen Emmy nominations.

In late 2017, the doctor was thrust into the spotlight amid allegations that the Dr. Phil production team put guests’ health at risk in order to boost ratings.

Former Survivor winner Todd Herzog made one such accusation: he was allegedly left alone in his hotel room with a bottle of vodka and then given a Xanax to “calm his nerves,” leading to his disastrous appearance on air.

A spokesman for the show called the allegations “absolutely, unequivocally false,” adding that the addicts on the show are “notorious for lying, deflecting, and trivializing.”

Following the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020, Dr. Phil began hosting his show from his home studio.

Foundation, Books and Podcasts

In 2003, he established the Dr. Phil Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting children with obesity, eating disorders, and other “silent epidemics.”

Dr. Phil has also written several New York Times best-sellers. The 20/20 Diet: Turn Your Weight Loss Vision Into Reality, his most recent book, was published in 2014.

Dr. Phil launched a new interview podcast, Phil in the Blanks, in early 2019. He quickly followed with a true crime podcast, Mystery and Murder: Analysis by Dr. Phil.
