Donny Osmond’s Biography (Career)

He was a little bit rock and roll, and born into a family of music. His legendary hit songs include “Go Away Little Girl” and “Puppy Love,” and with his sister Marie, he had one of the most popular musical variety shows on television. As he assessed back in 1971, at the peak of his musical career, which began with his four older brothers on NBC’s The Andy Williams Show:

Andy’s father saw [my brothers Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay] on television from Disneyland one night. They reminded him of the Williams Brothers when they got started, and he thought it would be a novelty to have them on . . . Andy’s show. He called us in Utah and asked us to come in and audition. [My brothers] sang as a quartet for quite a while before I got interested. My first public appearance was in Chicago when I was five years old . . . We all got started, really, by entertaining our family at home. We’ve always had Family Night on Friday night [with dinner by candlelight]. After our meal, we’d take turns putting on a program.

In the summer of 1978, entertainment reporter Martin A. Grove was “privileged” to have spent a partial afternoon talking with a few members of the Osmond musical family for a publication titled TV Stars Today Special. He used the word “privileged” because, as he explained in the article, “A Candid Conversation with the Osmonds,” he considered the legendary showbiz brood to be “some of the very nicest people [he] had the pleasure of interviewing. . . . They are in real life every bit as natural and human as they appear on TV.”

At the time, that was a reference to ABC’s then–super hit variety series, The Donny & Marie Show, which was headlined by two of the family’s most popular and closest members, siblings Donny and his younger sister Marie.

As Grove went on to assess, these two ageless performers, then in their late teens/early twenties, were “probably the youngest celebrities” to host their own variety show. Marie was only sixteen when the program began as a midseason replacement series in January 1976 on ABC, and her older brother Donny was only eighteen. “Despite their youth,” Grove clarified, “they are seasoned performers.”

Donny and his entire Osmond family (including children and countless cousins) are as wholesome as American apple pie, and they never denied it. Why would they? It’s one of the “secrets” to their everlasting appeal. A

s Donny explained to Grove in 1978, “If I didn’t have my family in this business, I’d get out of it right quick because it’s a very shaky business and it’s a hard business. If I couldn’t have my family with me I would definitely think about quitting. Because they’ve helped me so much . . . when we travel we always travel together as a family.

“We don’t go to [Hollywood] parties,” Donny continued. “We have our friends in the business. But we’re very busy working and traveling. But when we go home, we’re home people . . . We’re down-to-earth.”

Home, for the Osmonds, is Provo, Utah, where Donny and all of his siblings were raised by their parents George and Olive May Osmond.

Linda Burton, a friend of the Osmonds, summarizes how the multitalented, multimember family’s life and values shaped Donny’s humanity and subsequent appeal:

Donny comes from an amazing family. His parents showed [him], and Marie and all of his brothers so much love. They taught each of them right from wrong and, in doing so, they did something right! The family always stuck together, through any and all challenges . . . including early financial hardship . . . The entire country loved The Donny and Marie Show back in the 70s. Decades later when Donny and Marie went to Vegas for a six-week show, their managers realized that it would be a good place to let fans come from around the world to see them. And they ended up performing for years at the Flamingo, where they’re still going strong . . .

Another thing about Donny and all the family is that they give back. The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals nonprofit was started by their mom Olive, along with co-founders Marie and [male TV icon] John Schneider, and the entire family has for years been entertaining at Disneyland and Disney World, raising over two billion dollars for Children’s hospitals in the United States and Canada.

Donny and all the Osmonds have been entertaining people for over fifty years. Donny, alone, has sixty albums to his name. He’s come a long way since the teen idol days with “Puppy Love.” . . . He has a very loyal following because he’s so nice to all of his fans! He shares with them his struggles as well as his accomplishments. He keeps them up to date on his personal life ... when his sons graduate high school, go on a mission, when he was expecting his first grandchild.

All of it. And not all entertainers do that. You always come away from his concerts with a smile. He’s down-to-earth. He’s a family man and a religious man. He follows his beliefs and isn’t ashamed to say so . . . He’s always stuck by his morals and that is one of the reasons his fans are there for him.

Life is Just What You Make It: My Story So Far

At the age of five, Donny Osmond first sang his way into the hearts of North America. By the time he was a teenager, he had already had four different careers: as a solo artist, as a member of the Osmond Brothers, as part of a singing duo with his sister Marie, and as co-host of a highly successful television show.

But by the early 1980s, public perceptions had changed and Donny discovered that his name had become poison thanks to his squeaky-clean image. In this inspiring autobiography, Donny tells what it’s like to survive the ups and downs of the entertainment business while trying to keep his faith, dignity, and sense of humor. He recalls his experiences with a variety of celebrities, from Groucho Marx and Lucille Ball to Michael Jackson and Howard Stern.

He tells how he finally found a solution through marriage, fatherhood, perseverance and self-acceptance. And he tells of the long and difficult road that led to a new recording career, nearly two thousand triumphant appearances in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and a new nationally syndicated talk show. The millions who watched Donny grow up now embrace the man whose life and career embody the classic values so many share today.

If you’re climbing the ladder of life, you go rung by rung, one step at a time. Don’t look too far up, set your goals high but take one step at a time. Sometimes you don’t think you’re progressing until you step back and see how high you’ve really gone.

Well, unless you’ve suffered from panic attacks and social anxiety disorders, which is what I was diagnosed as having, it’s hard to explain it. But you go on stage knowing you’re actually physically going to die. You will keel over and die.

This whole head of the home thing has been blown way out of proportion. Some guys just take it way too far. Some parents take it way too far. Yet children need guidance. They need a parent to help and guide them. They also need a friend. They need a confidant.

I didn’t grow up with Broadway music. My mother played Perry Como, while I listened to Andy Williams records. Later on it was Cream, Grand Funk Railroad and lots of R&B like the Isley Bros. and Parliament.

Years ago, I was performing, and people kept calling out for ‘Puppy Love’ and I just didn’t want to. Then I thought I’d have some fun, so we did this insane heavy metal version of it. The applause was polite.
