Early Life

Doja Cat was born on October 21, 1995 in Los Angeles, California, USA as Amalaratna Zandile Dlamini to Dumisani Dlamini and Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer. Her father is a well-known South African actor, producer, and composer, and her mother is a painter.

Doja claims that she never knew her father as a child. Her father, on the other hand, denies this and claims that he has a “healthy” relationship with his daughter.

Doja and her mother moved to New York City shortly after her birth and stayed there for five years. Later, her family moved to Oak Park, California, where her mother enrolled her in ballet, tap, and jazz classes at the age of five.

When she was 11, her family moved to the Sherman Oaks neighborhood of Los Angeles, where she lived in an ashram in the Agoura Hills and practiced Hinduism for four years.

As she grew older and moved away from the ashram, she began taking breakdancing classes and eventually joined a professional poplocking troupe, with which she participated in dance competitions throughout Los Angeles while still in high school. She also regularly skipped school to participate in online chat rooms. She finally dropped out of high school at the age of 16.

Career

Doja Cat released her first single, ‘So High,’ in 2013. She rose to prominence the following year after signing with RCA Records and releasing her debut EP, ‘Purrr!’ Following that, she released the single ‘No Police.’ She then started uploading her music to YouTube and Soundcloud. Doja also began working with other artists, such as Hellboy, Elliphant, Pregnant Boy, and Skoolie Escobar.

She was featured on L8LOOMER’s track ‘Right Side’ on July 13, 2017. The singer released her single “Roll with Us” on February 1, 2018. The following month, she released the music video for the second track from her upcoming album, ‘Go to Town.’ Doja’s full-length debut album, ‘Amala,’ was released on March 30, 2018.

She released the song ‘Mooo!’ on her YouTube channel on August 10, 2018. The song quickly became popular. Its music video drew attention from a number of well-known artists, including Chris Brown and Chance the Rapper. To date, the video has received millions of views. Doja Cat released a single version of the viral video “Mooo!” on August 31, 2018.

Following that success, Doja Cat released her full-length debut album, Amala, which saw her expanding on her dreamy, meme-friendly sound with more hip-hop, pop, and R&B-infused tracks like “Candy” and “Roll with Us.” In 2019, she released an expanded version of Amala, which included the singles “Juicy” and “Tia Tamara,” both of which featured Rico Nasty.

Hot Pink, her sophomore album, arrived quickly after, with features from Smino, Gucci Mane, and Tyga, and leaned more into the sexually wry aspects of her ever-shifting persona. The album’s fifth single, “Say So,” was a Top Ten hit on the Billboard 200, propelling her even higher up the charts.

After steadily rising to the top of the Hot 100 at the start of 2020, the multi-platinum track finally reached number one in May, aided by a Nicki Minaj remix.

Doja carried the momentum from her breakout year into 2021 after winning a couple of American Music Awards. She began to work more frequently with established celebrities, including a guest appearance on Saweetie’s single “Best Friend,” contributing to an Ariana Grande remix with Megan Thee Stallion, and releasing the SZA-assisted single “Kiss Me More.”

Planet Her, her third full-length studio album, will be released in June 2021. It featured appearances by Young Thug, the Weeknd, JID, and others, as well as cover art by photographer David LaChapelle.

The album, which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 and topped the R&B albums chart, was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammys.

Doja reached number 18 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart in February 2022 with a cover of Hole’s “Celebrity Skin,” which featured lyrics reworked by her and Courtney Love.

Social Media

On social media, Doja has a sizable fan base. She has approximately 24.1 million Instagram followers and nearly 11 million YouTube subscribers. That means her social media accounts could have brought in millions of dollars from advertising revenue and brand endorsements.

Personal Life & Boyfriend

Doja has only had one public relationship since her rise to fame, and that was with singer Jawny (formerly Johnny Utah). He caught Doja’s attention not long after releasing his breakout single, “Honeypie,” in April 2019, and while she didn’t particularly like the song, she did like the way he looked.

Doja and Jawny called it quits in February 2020, and she revealed the news to fans during an IG Live. “Everything is fine,” she stated. “I unfollowed my ex, and everything is fine.” We’ve been cool… There is no drama or strange nonsense going on. “It just didn’t work.”

Doja and fellow rapper French Montana (who collaborated on his track “Handstand”) sparked romance rumors in September 2020 when they were spotted hanging out on a yacht. It only took Doja a day to put an end to the rumors, tweeting, “Me and French got a song coming out.” “F*ckin chill.” The case is closed!

Rumors resurfaced in January 2022 after the two traveled to the Bahamas to celebrate mutual friend Adam Zia’s birthday, according to Page Six. But, after French shared a photo of the two of them at dinner from their vacation, Doja slid into the comments section and wrote, “Love you brother.” In conclusion, their relationship appears to be platonic and nothing more.

Although the rapper has been romantically linked to a few people over the years, she has never confirmed her relationship status, owing to her desire to keep her love life private.
