Early Life

Tijs Michiel Verwest was born on January 17, 1969 in Breda, Netherlands. When he was four years old, his parents divorced. His mother raised him, along with his older brother and sister, on her own.

Tiesto used to play soccer as a forward striker in high school. He used to play for the ‘Saint Anna Boys Club,’ and later for the ‘Vesting Boys.’ After finishing his education, he worked at a variety of odd jobs to supplement his income.

Tiesto discovered his love of music at a young age. He began by randomly mixing various genres of music to create new tracks. He was also able to monetize a few of those tracks. He then spent a few months working in restaurants.

He didn’t become a professional DJ until he was 14 years old. He began his career by performing at house parties. He then moved on to play in clubs where he could get the most attention. Spock, a club in the Netherlands, was his first club.

The time he spent at ‘Spock’ was beneficial because playing the playlists that the audience preferred gave him a plethora of ideas that inspired him to make revolutionary changes to his profession.

He began by playing acid house, a subgenre of house music. He then changed to gabber, a type of electronic music. During the early stages of his career, he went by the names Da Joker and DJ Limited.

He then worked with Dutch DJ Ferry Corsten on his next project, ‘Gouryella,’ which was another trance compilation. The album broke numerous music records and sold over a million copies in its first week of release. For a long time, it was also in the top ten of the UK Singles Chart.
