Early Life

DJ Snake was born on June 13, 1986, in the Parisian suburb of Ermont to Algerian immigrants. Snake, who considered his childhood neighborhood to be a slum, dropped out of school at the age of 15 to work in a well-known record store in Paris.

DJ Snake, who cites Cypress Hill and KRS-One as early influences, was heavily involved in graffiti art as a child. He almost always avoided being apprehended by the gendarmes who used to go after him for defacing the city walls with graffiti in Paris. His ability to avoid being hit earned him the nickname “Snake.”

Later, when he began deejaying, he was dubbed ‘DJ Snake,’ and the moniker stuck.

DJ Snake met many well-known hip-hop artists, rappers, and EDM DJs while working in the popular record store. He struck up a friendship with some of these singers and musicians, including DJ Cut Killer and hip hop vocalists Cypress Hill and KRS-One, who would later become his mentors.

DJ Snake stated in an interview that he decided to become a disc jockey after seeing DJ Cut Killer compose music for the cult French film “La Haine.”

Snake began his career as a budding DJ, performing in shows and events at bars and nightclubs in Paris, most notably ‘Les Baines Douches’ and ‘VIPROOM.’ He began with small, impromptu gigs at house parties before progressing to famous Parisian clubs.

DJ Snake met his future manager, Steve Goncalves, at one of the clubs in 2005, when deejaying was still in its infancy and open format ruled the roost. After three years, Steve teamed up with Snake and encouraged him to compose music on his own.

Music Career

When DJ Snake got in touch with Lady Gaga’s on-the-road DJ, Paul Blair, he got his first big break. Snake composed 20 original songs for Blair, five of which he later incorporated into ‘Government Hooker,’ a track from Lady Gaga’s album, ‘Born This Way.’

DJ Snake contributed to the creation of ‘Born This Way,’ which was nominated for a Grammy in 2012. Following the release of the album, he co-produced the track ‘Government Hooker,’ which was voted the best by countless Lady Gaga fans.

In 2012, Snake effectively remixed tracks by rap luminaries such as Kanye West’s ‘New Slaves,’ Major Lazer’s ‘Bubble Butt,’ and Aluna George’s ‘You Know You Like It.’ He worked with Paul Blair on the tracks ‘Do What U Want,’ ‘Sexxx Dreams,’ and ‘Applause’ for Lady Gaga’s album ‘ARTPOP.’

In December 2013, DJ Snake collaborated with Lil Jon on the single ‘Turn Down for What,’ which was released and distributed by Columbia Records. In the same month and year, the song reached the top ten on Billboard’s Electronic Dance Music chart.

‘What are you turning down for?’ In January 2014, he rose to the fifth spot on the Billboard EDM chart and debuted at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. This track received gold and platinum certifications in February and March of 2014.

‘Turn Down for What’ was nominated for a number of MTV Video Music Awards in 2014, including ‘Best Visual Effects,’ ‘Best Art Direction,’ and ‘Best Direction.’ The song went on to win the MTV Video Music Award for ‘Best Direction.’

DJ Snake and his colleague Tchami, an electronic dance musician-cum-producer, were unable to attend the Monster Mash Festival in Toronto in 2015 due to a car accident in which they were severely injured.

The singles ‘Get Low’ and ‘Turn Down for What’ were included on the original soundtrack of ‘Furious 7,’ the seventh installment of the ‘Fast and Furious’ film series, which was released in 2015.

In 2014, Island Records marketed and distributed DJ Snake’s remix track “You Know You Like It.” In 2015, the remixed song climbed to the top of the Rhythmic Songs and Billboard Dance Mix/Show Airplay charts. That year, the remix peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

According to the Associated Press, ‘You Know You Like It’ ranked eighth among all songs streamed in the United States on Spotify, a digital music and video streaming service, in 2015.

DJ Snake collaborated with Major Lazer on the opening single, ‘Lean On,’ from the latter’s third studio album, ‘Peace Is the Mission,’ which was released by Mad Decent, a US record label, in March 2015. The song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100.

With over 526 million downloads by November 2015, ‘Lean On’ became the most streamed track on Spotify since its inception. A video version of the song, directed by Tim Erem and shot in India, was also released in the same month as the single.

His single “Magenta Riddim” was released on February 23, 2018.
