Diplo was born on November 10, 1978, in Mississippi, to Barbara and Thomas Pentz. He is of German descent. Since his childhood, he has been fascinated by music, particularly rap and electronic music.
His first exposure to Miami Bass occurred when his family relocated to Miami, which later played a significant role in shaping his musical instincts.
His ‘different’ musical tastes alienated him from other kids in his neighborhood at a time when rock music was popular and rap was just getting started.
He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Central Florida before moving on to further his education in Philadelphia. That’s where he began his DJing career, albeit in small doses at nightclubs and parties. Regardless of how well he played, he lacked professional experience and had to learn on the job as he rose in popularity.
He befriended DJ Low Budget, who had a similar sensibility to Diplo, and their collaboration led to the creation of Hollertronix, an event night where both DJs spun whatever they wanted.
They performed in California nightclubs and used their savings to organise special events under their pseudonyms. Their joint and solo mixtapes became popular in the Philadelphia nightclub scene, and Diplo’s solo album “Never Scared” was named one of the best albums of 2003.
After settling down and becoming financially secure through his music, Diplo wasted no time in launching his next venture, a studio called ‘The Mausoleum,’ which was later used to record music and videos by Shakira, Plastic Little, and Scream.
While DJing in 2004 on one of his remix songs, Diplo got into the good graces of M.I.A, who immediately summoned Diplo for a meeting, who was accidentally playing one of her songs as she walked in.
The mix tape titled ‘Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1’ was the result of their collaboration, and the album went on to receive so much raw fame that it was mentioned by the New York Times as one of the best albums of the year. Diplo continued to collaborate with M.I.A, and through her, he met DJ Switch, with whom he collaborated on the single ‘Paper Planes,’ which reached the Billboard 200 top 5 songs list.
All of this success was overwhelming, and Diplo quickly rose to the position of producer, landing collaborations with big names like Shakira, Kid Kudi, Bruno Mars, Snoop Dogg, and many other rock bands and music groups. He began work on his next project, titled ‘Mad Descent,’ in which he experimented with Brazilian sounds, drew on his extensive travel experience, and included freshness in his tunes.
Mad Decent was founded in 2005 and has since collaborated with several new artists including Gucci Mane, Rusko, and Jamie Fanatic. He kept climbing the success ladder by collaborating with new and established artists, and he produced songs for some of the biggest names in music, including Lil Wayne, Britney Spears, Usher, Justin Bieber, and Ariana Grande.
Downtown Records signed Diplo and Switch for a collaborative album with Baile Funk and Miami Bass as their main sound inspirations, and Major Lazer was born. In 2010, the duo traveled to Jamaica to record their album ‘Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do,’ which was quickly followed by an EP titled ‘Lazers Never Die.’ Major Lazer’s second album, ‘Free the Universe,’ was released in 2013, following the departure of Switch.
The group collaborated with several other artists and produced quality music, which helped them advance to the point in their careers where they were regarded as the best music group in the country.
The next album, titled ‘Peace is the Mission,’ was released in 2015, and a single from the album, ‘Lean On,’ became Spotify’s most viewed single ever with over 800 streams, and the song went on to receive 2 billion hits on YouTube, making it one of the most watched music videos ever, and other songs from the album also performed exceptionally well.
In 2016, Major Lazer collaborated with Justin Bieber and Spanish singer MO on the single ‘Cold Water,’ which went on to top music charts in many countries around the world. The latest album, ‘Music is the Weapon,’ was co-produced by Sia, The Weeknd, and Ty Dolla Sign.
Diplo has also collaborated with renowned DJ Skrillex and performed for the first time as Jack U in 2013. Their first collaborative effort, titled ‘Skrillex and Diplo Presents Jack U,’ was released in February 2015 and featured several other artists.
The album’s single ‘Where Are You Now?’ topped the charts in many countries, and the album went on to become a huge success in nightclubs all over the world. The duo went on to win a Grammy in the category of ‘Best Dance Album’ in 2016.
Diplo returned to Islamabad in 2018 with Major Lazer for the first Mad Decent Block Party, along with Adil Omar, SNKM, Talal Qureshi, Valentino Khan, Chrome Sparks, Lyari Underground and a host of other acts. Diplo and Autoerotique (a house group from Toronto) released a music video titled “Waist Time” in January 2017, which was filmed in a warehouse in London.
Diplo released the song “So Long” in 2019 as Thomas Wesley with American country singer Cam.
Diplo had a late-night show called ‘Diplo and Friends’ on BBC Radio 1 / 1Xtra on Saturdays between 23:00 and 1:00 GMT, where he put together mixes of some of the biggest names in dance music. He has ended his tenure at BBC Radio 1, effective 2021. In the United States, Diplo also has several shows called Diplo and Friends.
On October 2, 2015, Diplo, Jillionaire, Walshy Fire and Eric Hamilton introduced “Lazer Sound” on Apple Music’s Beats 1. The latest radio show, curated by Diplo and the Major Lazer crew, features interviews, live performances and brand new music.
Diplo reportedly paid $2.425 million for a home in Beachwood Canyon in 2016. Located in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, the home has a modern design with large glass walls and spectacular views of the city, the canyons and the ocean.
The 2,500-square-foot property also includes a studio and a cedar hot tub. The home also features a succulent wall and a two-car garage. Diplo sold this home in April 2021 for $2.8 million.
Diplo will buy Kid Rock’s former home in Malibu in November 2020. Kid Rock paid $11.6 million for the house in 2006. He sold it in 2017 for $9.5 million. Diplo paid $13.2 million.

From 2003 to 2008, he was in a relationship with rapper M.I.A. M.I.A. later revealed that he emotionally abused her during their turbulent relationship. In 2014 and 2015, Diplo dated singer Katy Perry for nearly a year.
