It was the first television series in American history to feature a black woman in a non-stereotypical role, and it was a milestone for both her career and the medium. In the 1980s, she portrayed Dominique Deveraux, a biracial diva, on the primetime soap opera Dynasty.

Carroll received numerous stage and screen nominations and awards, including a Tony Award in 1962, a Golden Globe Award in 1968 and five Emmy Award nominations. Carroll died of breast cancer on Oct. 4, 2019.

Diahann Carroll’s Career

Diahann Carroll is a Tony award winning and Oscar and Emmy nominated actress/singer. Carroll’s appeal as an artist and a human being on so many levels combines to form the complete package of a woman who was destined from day one to bring, be, and do something special in the world.

Each of her artistic gifts and humanitarian traits became icing on the creative cake that was baked to delicious profundity when she was first introduced as Carol Diahann Johnson on July 17, 1935, in the Bronx, New York, by way of subway conductor John Johnson and his wife Mabel Faulk Johnson.

Some 33 years later she made her legendary television debut as nurse Julia Baker on Julia, which, when on NBC from 1968 to 1971, became the first series to feature a female African American lead. Editor in chief David Laurell interviewed Carroll in 2011 for Life After 50 Magazine. When Laurell wondered if there were any similarities between herself and Julia Baker, Carroll replied:

When people ask me how I came up with the characterization for Julia, I tell them that I simply watched my family. My mother was a nurse, and I have cousins who were doctors.

The adjustment for me was finding out that there were an awful lot of people who didn’t know about that part of the black community. In every community there is a ghetto, there is a middle class, and there is an upper class, so why would the black community be any different? Julia was very real and alive—all over the country— all over the world. I have had Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian, Peruvians all tell me that they loved that show. They tell me they grew up on the show and that I reminded them of their mother or sister.

According to reports by WebPro News and UPI.com, Carroll was pleased to be joined on stage at the Emmys in 2013 by contemporary female TV star Kerry Washington, of ABC’s hit Scandal. They were copresenting the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series to Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale. Both African American women have been associated with Emmy- nominated TV series. While next to Washington at the podium, Carroll said:

It’s been such a long time since I’ve been standing in this place, I don’t know what to do. But the men are much more beautiful than when I was doing television. I don’t know where you came from, but I’m very happy to see you. After all, my leading man [on Julia] was [the much older] Lloyd Nolan, and those of you who know what that means—don’t repeat to anyone . . . I feel we’re a little behind. We need to catch up. We’re all very grateful to the Emmys because they’ve been on our side. At the same time, we’d like it to be a little more with what’s going on in the world.

That same year, she performed in the feature film Peeples, which marked her first big-screen appearance since portraying Elzora in 1997’s Eve’s Bayou.

Through it all, she has embraced and continues to enjoy her craft, while generously donating time, money, and support to various civic and humanitarian causes.

On May 13, 2013, Carroll appeared on the esteemed PBS talkfest The Tavis Smiley Show. As she told Smiley, “I am very happy to be busy.” For her, acting is a “full-time job.” “I love it,” she said. With a varied career that has spanned decades before and after Julia, on television, in feature films, and on the stage, Carroll has always displayed her elegance, intelligence, multitalents, and generous spirit on several levels, defining her iconic status and allure in the process. She’s nothing but grateful for selecting a vocation that has afforded her many luxuries, and, as she continued to tell Smiley, “I don’t feel I have missed out on anything in life. . . . I can’t say that I prefer one part of my life or another.”

Decades earlier, for the January 1969 edition of Movie Life Magazine, Diahann spoke with Hollywood luminary reporter Army Archerd about her most famous character from Julia, who was allowed to date but never to marry. As show producer Hal Kantor had recalled to Archerd, the reasoning behind that strategy was simple: Diahann was the star and it was a challenge to find an actor of equal stature to play her husband—from an aesthetic as well as economic viewpoint.

Kantor called Carroll, “One of God’s great creations—bright and sweet.”
