Early Life

Dennis Keith Rodman was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on May 13, 1961. Rodman was born into a family with a lot of problems. Early in Rodman’s life, his father, Philander, left his mother, Shirley, and their three young children, including Rodman and his two sisters. After Philander left, Rodman’s mother moved the family to Dallas. There, she worked almost any odd job she could find to feed and clothe her kids.

Rodman didn’t seem very athletic or outgoing at first, which was strange. He was only 5 feet, 6 inches tall for most of high school, so he was cut from the football team and quit the basketball team because he didn’t get enough playing time.

After Rodman graduated from high school in 1979, his future looked unclear. He worked wherever he could, like as a cleaner at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport. But when he wasn’t working, he could be found on local basketball courts, where the 6-foot-7-inch player was a powerhouse.

Through a family friend, the coaches at Cooke County Junior College in Gainesville, Texas, soon heard about Rodman’s achievements. They invited him to attend the school. He agreed, and he turned out to be the best player in the program. Rodman, however, couldn’t keep up with his schoolwork, and after a year, he was kicked out of school.

Still, Rodman’s play did not go unnoticed, and Southeastern Oklahoma State soon asked him to join their team. His toughness on the court blew away his opponents, and he averaged close to 26 points and 16 rebounds per game during his three years at the school. In the 1986 NBA draft, the 25-year-old Rodman was picked by the Detroit Pistons in the second round. He was athletic and had a strange body.

NBA Success

For a number of years, the Pistons and Rodman made a great team. When Rodman joined the Pistons, a new era of basketball began. Detroit became one of the best teams in the NBA thanks to Rodman’s love for head coach Chuck Daly and point guard Isiah Thomas. In 1989 and 1990, the club won the championship.

Rodman was a big part of the reason. Rodman was picked for the NBA All-Star team in 1990 and named the Defensive Player of the Year that same year. He was a tough defender and a hard worker on the boards. He won the first of seven straight rebounding titles in 1992.

After Daly retired from the Pistons in 1993, Rodman’s relationship with the team went bad, and he was traded to the San Antonio Spurs. Rodman was traded again before the 1995–96 season. This time, he went to the Chicago Bulls, where he played with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen to win three straight NBA titles.

After his time with the Chicago Bulls, Rodman played for a short time with the Los Angeles Lakers at the end of the 1999 season. The following year, he played his last game for the Dallas Mavericks.

Rodman would end his career with a total of five NBA titles, two trips to the All-Star game, and two times as the league’s best defensive player. He was put into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2011.

A Troubled Life

Rodman has had a lot of success, but he has also had a lot of trouble. Rodman’s intensity on the court has sometimes gotten in the way of other parts of his life. In February 1993, Rodman was found sleeping in a truck in a parking lot with a gun in his hand. This made people worry that Rodman might be thinking about killing himself. He said that it wasn’t true.

Still, Rodman seemed to like the idea that he was crazy. It was part of his on-court persona. He got fined by the league for being too rough, and in 1997, he paid a cameraman $200,000 to settle charges that he had kicked him on purpose in the groin while going after a loose ball. He dyed his hair all the time and loved to talk about his off-court relationships with famous people like Madonna and Carmen Electra.

Even after he stopped playing basketball, Rodman’s life was still full of ups and downs. He was arrested in Los Angeles in April 2008 for allegedly hitting his wife at a hotel. Rodman didn’t admit guilt, so the judge gave him 45 days of community service.

In June 2010, it came out that Rodman owed more than $300,000 in child support.

Off-Court Endeavors

Rodman also played in the NBA, but for a short time in the late 1990s, he tried his hand at professional wrestling. Around this time, he also had his own show called The Rodman World Tour.

Rodman went on to be a regular on reality TV shows. He came back to Donald Trump’s business show The Apprentice in 2013. He had been on the show before. Rodman tried to clean up his act on the 2010 shows Celebrity Rehab and Sober House. He is known for living a wild life.

Relationship with Kim Jong-un

Rodman, who is always a surprise, also tried to be diplomatic in February 2013. He spent two days in North Korea and met with Kim Jong-un, the leader of that country. Both like basketball, and while Rodman was there, he and Kim watched a game together.

Rodman went on a trip, and when he got back, he went on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Even though Kim’s record on human rights isn’t great, Rodman told Stephanopoulos that Kim was “awesome” and “so honest.” The former professional basketball player also said he would like to go back to North Korea to help make peace between the US and North Korea.

In the spring of 2013, Rodman asked Kim to free Kenneth Bae, an American who had been given a 15-year prison sentence in North Korea in November 2012. Rodman went back to North Korea again in December 2013. In January of that year, Rodman was still in the United States when he gave a controversial interview to CNN news anchor Chris Cuomo. In the interview, Rodman said that Bae’s punishment was fair.

Rodman apologized for what he said in the interview two days after it aired. He also said that he had been drinking and under a lot of stress at the time. In a statement, Rodman said, “I want to start by apologizing to Kenneth Bae’s family.” “I want to say sorry to my teammates and the people in charge of us. I want to also say sorry to Chris Cuomo.” The following year, Bae was finally let out.

In June 2018, Rodman went to Singapore to be near where the historic meeting between Trump and Kim took place. Even though Rodman wasn’t officially part of the diplomatic talks, CNN’s Chris Cuomo gave him an interview. He wore a “Make America Great Again” hat and got visibly upset when he talked about the trouble he got into for being friends with Kim.

ESPN’s ’30 for 30′ and ‘The Last Dance’

In September 2019, an episode of ESPN’s popular 30 for 30 series was called “Rodman: For Better or Worse.” It was about the former basketball star. Many of his former teammates talked openly about him in the documentary. One clip showed Jordan admitting that Rodman’s partying habits made him think he wouldn’t live past 40.

The next spring, another ESPN documentary called The Last Dance brought Rodman back into the spotlight.

The Last Dance showed how teammates and coaches put up with Rodman’s strange behavior because of his skills as a defender and rebounder. It also showed how smart Jordan was as he tried to lead the Bulls to one last NBA title in 1997-1998.
