Early Life and Career

Deepak Chopra was born in New Delhi, India on October 22, 1947. Deepak Chopra, the son of eminent cardiologist Krishnan Chopra, initially decided against following in his father’s footsteps, preferring to pursue a career as a journalist. Eventually, he became interested in medicine and enrolled at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in his hometown.

Chopra aspired to a career in Western medicine and immigrated to the United States in 1970, leaving India with only $25 in his pocket and the promise of a residency at a hospital in New Jersey. Following his residency, Chopra moved to Boston and quickly rose to the position of chief of medicine at New England Memorial Hospital.

Despite his rising star, Chopra grew disillusioned with Western medicine and its reliance on prescription drugs. The work began to wear on the promising doctor, who later claimed to have smoked up to a pack of cigarettes per day and drank on a regular basis. “Very unhappy people, doctors,” he’s said. “They deal with demanding, litigious, and intimidating relatives of patients. That is the medical environment. Most of my coworkers were stressed, and many of them were addicts. I used to feel a great deal of frustration and tightness. My greatest fear was getting into mischief. In the United States, malpractice suits are a big deal.”

During this time, Chopra read a book on transcendental medicine, which changed his life and, ultimately, his career path. As his interest in alternative medicine grew, so did his understanding of Western medicine’s limitations.

Chopra left his job at New England Memorial Hospital after meeting transcendental meditation guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and founded the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Products International, a company that specialized in alternative products such as herbal teas and oils. The company, which Chopra co-founded with the Maharishi, successfully launched Chopra into the world of alternative medicine. Chopra assisted in the establishment of several affiliated clinics and became well-known among celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson, and fashion designer Donna Karan.

Best-Selling Author

Chopra had split from the Maharishi by the early 1990s and relocated to California, where he became the executive director of the Sharp Institute for Human Potential and Mind/Body Medicine. But, after a falling out with his bosses, he founded the Chopra Center for Well Being in 1995.

Chopra had achieved international acclaim by this point. His first book, Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine, was a moderate success when it was released in 1989. But it was his 1993 book Ageless Body, Timeless Mind that catapulted Chopra to celebrity status, selling over a million hardcover copies alone.

Chopra rose to prominence at a time when the self-help industry was just getting started. His central message is that relying on the material world makes it difficult to find peace and happiness.

Chopra believes that the answers to our health and happiness can be found within ourselves. His message has undoubtedly struck a chord with the general public. Chopra has published 86 books in total, including 14 best-sellers such as The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, which have been translated into several languages. Chopra has also written columns for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Washington Post.

Time magazine dubbed Chopra “the poet-prophet of alternative medicine” and named him one of the century’s top 100 heroes in June 1999.

He was a confidante of pop superstar Michael Jackson and regularly brought his message to the Oprah Winfrey Show.

His career has even taken him into the music industry. He’s worked with a variety of artists, including Madonna and Dave Stewart of the 1980s band the Eurythmics.
