Early Life

Debi Thomas, who was born Debra Janine Thomas on March 25, 1967, in Poughkeepsie, New York, is best known for becoming the first African American to win a medal at the Winter Olympics in 1988. Thomas first entered the skating rink when he was five years old. She was taking formal lessons and winning competitions by the age of nine. At the age of ten, Thomas began working with coach Alex McGowan, who guided her career as she prepared for the Olympics.

Judges frequently discriminated against Thomas as an African American figure skater, awarding higher marks to her competitors for what many saw as less impressive skills. She persisted, and at the age of 12, she advanced to the national novice finals, where she took silver.

Leading American Skater

Thomas continued to skate competitively while pursuing higher education. Thomas won two major career victories as a freshman at Stanford University, where she studied engineering. In February 1986, she won the senior women’s title at the United States Figure Skating Championships, becoming the first African American to do so. That same year, Thomas won gold at the World Championships.

Thomas competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. She took bronze in the women’s figure skating event, finishing behind Canada’s Elizabeth Manley and East Germany’s Katarina Witt, making her the first African American to win a medal at the Winter Olympics. That same year, Thomas won the US Championships for the second time.

Life After Olympics

Thomas graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in 1991. She gave up skating the following year to attend Northwestern University Medical School. Thomas decided to pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon after graduating from Northwestern in 1997.

She received a fellowship at Centinela Hospital’s Dorr Arthritis Institute in Inglewood after completing her residency at Charles R. Drew University in Los Angeles, California. Thomas established her own practice in Virginia in 2010, specializing in knee and hip replacements.

Thomas has received numerous awards for her contributions to figure skating over the years. She was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2000 and represented the United States Olympic Committee at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. Thomas also became an active supporter of several charities, such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation.

Thomas had been out of the spotlight for many years, and when she reappeared in late 2015, fans were shocked to learn about her life’s turn for the worse. Following two divorces, Thomas was forced to close her practice, and with her savings gone and custody of her teenage son relinquished, she revealed she was living in a bedbug-infested trailer with her fiancee and his two sons. The news broke after the once-famous athlete contacted motivational coach Iyanla Vanzant, star of the reality show Iyanla: Fix My Life, in the hopes of turning things around.
