Early Years and College

Daniel Constantine Marino Jr., regarded as one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time, was born on September 15, 1961, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marino, the couple’s only son and the oldest of Daniel and Veronica Marino’s three children, grew up in a working-class neighborhood where his father delivered newspapers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Marino, a Steelers fan, went on to become an All-American quarterback at Central Catholic High School. Marino was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 1978 as a top baseball pitcher due to his big arm. Marino, however, had his heart set on football and turned down the club and its $35,000 signing bonus.

Marino enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh in 1979 and became the team’s starting quarterback midway through his freshman year. Marino went on to have a stellar college career, setting NCAA passing records for career attempts, completions, yardage, and touchdowns.

Marino’s stock fell in the 1983 draft as a result of rumors of unproven drug use, allowing him to land in the hands of the Miami Dolphins, whose legendary coach Don Shula selected the QB with the 27th overall pick.

Pro Career With the Miami Dolphins

Despite the fact that five other quarterbacks were selected ahead of him, Marino proved to be the best of all of them and one of the all-time greats. Marino threw for 20 touchdowns as a rookie, leading the Dolphins to a 12-4 record and becoming the first rookie to start at quarterback in the Pro Bowl. He was also named the NFL Rookie of the Year.

The following season, 1984, was Marino’s best and one of the best by an NFL quarterback in history. Marino set single-season records with 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns that year, while also setting new NFL records for completions with 362. That same year, he led the Dolphins to the Super Bowl, where they were defeated 38-16 by the Joe Montana-led San Francisco 49ers.

While a championship would elude him, Marino established himself as one of the league’s most prolific passers during his 17-year career, setting NFL records in career passing totals (61,361 yards), attempts (8,358), completions (4,967), and touchdowns (420).

Marino announced his retirement from football in 2000. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame five years later. He joined the CBS show The NFL Today’s on-air crew in 2002 and remained a fixture on the panel until 2014. That same year, he returned to the Miami Dolphins, where he’d spent his entire career, as a special adviser.
