Cyrano De Bergerac Net Worth

Cyrano De Bergerac had an estimated net worth of $5 million at death. Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the theatre’s unheralded heroes. Cyrano had earned the reputation of being a great swordsman during his military days long before he entered the world of creativity.

Cyrano’s close friend and biography writer Henry Le Bret had mentioned in the introduction page of the latter’s famous book ‘Voyage to the Moon’ that he ‘always passed for a man of singular rare wit,’ such was the impression Cyrano had created among his people. Many of Cyrano’s plays were published and staged on multiple occasions.

Even playwrights who were stuck for ideas liked Cyrano’s work. Mortiere, one of France’s most popular playwrights at the time, had plagiarized a few of Cyrano’s ideas and used them in his play ‘Les Fourberies de Scapin.’

Cyrano, like many Bohemians, had both admirers and detractors. Cyrano’s life alone has inspired numerous writers and directors, who have adapted the man’s experiences into operas, plays, and films.

Early Life

Espérance Bellanger and Abel de Cyrano gave birth to Cyrano Bergerac on March 6, 1619, in Paris. Cyrano’s father was the Lord of Mauvières and Bergerac and a lawyer.

Cyrano was sent to a country priest for his primary education when he was seven years old. Later, Cyrano relocated to Paris and continued his education at the ‘College De Dormans-Beauvais.’ Cyrano, on the other hand, did not finish his degree.

Career

Following his education, Cyrano joined the infantry, also known as the corps of guards, and served for the forces from 1639 to 1640. Cyrano joined the army when he was only nineteen years old.

Cyrano was severely wounded during the ‘Siege of Arras’ in 1640, after which he hung his boots from military service. He then spent time with renowned mathematician, scientist, and philosopher Pierre Gassandi. Cyrano met other intellectuals such as Molière’ and Chapelle during his days with Gassandi. He also met David Dupron, from whom Cyrano received his dancing lessons.

Cyrano then started writing. His first work is said to have been a comedy play called ‘Le Pédant Joué.’ Although this play was written in 1645, it is unknown when the act was first performed. This piece of work was published nine years after Cyrano wrote it.

Cyrano wrote the introduction to ‘The Judgement of Paris,’ a poetic work written by one of his closest friends, Charles’Coypeau’ d’Assoucy, the following year.

In 1646, Cyrano wrote ‘La Mort d’Agrippine,’ which became one of his most famous works. This tragic five-act play dealt with the exploitation of power and the spread of corruption. The play was so popular that it was published in 1653 and performed twice on stage the following year. The play was revived in 1872, more than two centuries later.

During his final years, Cyrano began writing two of his most influential works, ‘Voyage To The Moon’ and ‘The States and Empires Of The Sun.’ Though the latter was unfinished, both works were published in 1657 and 1662, respectively.

Major Works

In 1653, his friend Charles Coypeau published a collection of Cyrano’s works titled ‘Oeuvres Diverses,’ which translated to ‘Diverse Works.’ The book included works like ‘The Death of Agrippina,’ ‘The Pedant Outwitted,’ and ‘The Letters.’ The book was also known for a famous portrait of Cyrano painted by one of Cyrano’s friends, Zachary Heince.

Personal Life & Legacy

Savinien was the original name for Cyrano. Before arriving at Cyrano, he changed his name several times. Hercule de Bergerac, de Bergerac, Alexandre de Cyrano Bergurac, and de Bergerac Cyrano were a few of his fictitious names.

Cyrano died at the age of 36 on July 28, 1655. The circumstances surrounding Cyrano’s death remain unknown. Many claim that Cyrano spent his final days in an asylum because the “artist in him had gone insane with numerous ideas.” Abel, Cyrano’s brother, was accused of forcing the playwright into such a situation.

The play ‘Cyrano de Bergerac,’ directed by noted playwright Edmund Rostand, was one of the best tributes to Cyrano paid by the theatre world.

This post-Cyrano play suggests that the French playwright died after a wooden beam fell on his head during one of his visits to his patron Duc D’Arpajon’s residence.

Cyrano’s life became the inspiration for several operas in the 1900s. The adaptations were created by a number of well-known playwrights, including Walter Damrosch, Franco Alfano, and Eino Tamberg.

The Adventures of Cyrano de Bergerac was written by renowned author Louis Gallet. The central character of this adventure story was inspired by events in Cyrano’s life.

The film ‘Cyrano de Bergerac,’ based on Cyrano’s life, was released in 1990. This film received widespread praise from both critics and audiences.

Spouse

According to many sources, Cyrano was a homosexual who had a relationship with his friend Charles Coypeau.
