What is Coursera?
There are thousands of courses on Coursera, an online course platform that helps you explore your interests and expand your career options.
Coursera is one of dozens of platforms that offer Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) as well as degrees, professional courses, Coursera specializations, and MasterTrack courses. Coursera was founded in 2012 by Stanford computer science professors Daphne Koller and Andrew Ng.
This Coursera course report may look familiar, but Coursera is not the only provider of MOOCs. If you research online, you’ll find that there are many other options, such as Udemy, FutureLearn, and others.
It’s the sheer breadth of Coursera’s offerings that sets it apart from the competition. The University of Michigan, Princeton University, Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania are among the first schools to offer content on the platform. This allows users to access an Ivy League-level education without ever leaving home or being accepted to these competing institutions.
Over time, Coursera has added specialisations, which are collections of courses that focus on specific skills.
Both governments and businesses can take advantage of the platform for degrees and workforce development.
Coursera now works with more than 200 universities and institutions in 29 countries. The University of London, Yale University, the University of Illinois, and Yonsei University in Korea are just a few of the high-profile universities the platform works with.
How Does Coursera Work?
The Coursera courses last about four to twelve weeks and include one to two hours of video lectures per week.
As with any other course, Coursera courses vary a bit depending on the option you choose. Some include quizzes, graded assignments, and weekly exercises, while others may include final exams, final projects, or even honors assignments!
There are also many courses that are available on demand. So you can take as much time as you need to complete the course without worrying about completing it on time.
In addition to guided projects, Coursera offers more than 100 different on-demand courses. Guided projects take two to three hours and can be completed at your own pace.
Coursera offers a full master’s degree program. Since then, the school has expanded its offerings to include an MBA and a Master of Computer Science in Data Science. Originally, the school offered a Master’s in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and a Master’s in Accounting (the latter was offered by the College of Illinois).
What are the Features of Coursera Learning Platform?
With Coursera, you can learn from professors at accredited university-level institutions.
With Coursera, you have access to real courses, most of which have been taught at universities. Unlike other course platforms where courses are taught by instructors who have no academic training or experience.
The universities you can choose from include the University of Michigan, Rice University, Johns Hopkins University, Yale University, and Princeton University.
There are over 4100 courses available. You can learn something new, acquire new skills, or sharpen your critical thinking skills.
Coursera is extremely easy to use. When you click on a course that interests you, you have the option to view information about the course, such as the syllabus and an introduction to the instructor.
Not only will you find out what topics are covered, but you can also view the schedule for the course.
On the course home page, you can get an overview of the individual weeks of the course after registration. This is very helpful for learners.
When you enrol, you know what you need to focus on each week and how much time you can dedicate to the course.
What Type of Courses is Coursera Offering?
When it comes to learning on Coursera, there are essentially five different options.
Depending on your needs, you can take individual courses, specialize, earn a professional certificate or MasterTrack certificate, or graduate. All of these options vary in length, cost, and difficulty.
Take a course in business analytics, Python, or graphic design to learn the skills you need to succeed.
You can also take longer, more intensive courses that prepare you for a career in IT, cloud engineering, or artificial intelligence. Coursera also offers on-demand training and development for large companies.
In addition, Coursera lets you choose from hundreds of different specializations. Specializations serve as an intermediate step between individual courses. With a specialization, you take a series of related courses instead of just one.
These specializations are ideal for people who want to pursue specific goals in a particular field.
Below are some popular specializations:
- Digital Marketing
- Healthcare IT Support
- Communication Skills for Engineers
- Data Science Fundamentals
- AI for Medicine
- Organizational Change and Culture for Adopting Google Cloud
A professional certificate may also be pursued. The focus of professional certificates is more career-oriented and in-depth than that of specialisations.
They usually take a few months to complete. The institution that offered the course issues these certificates and provides hands-on projects that you can use to build your portfolio. As a student, you gain access to industry-recognised certifications and resources to support your career.
The MasterTrack certificate is the final option. With this certificate, you can complete online learning modules to earn a master’s degree by taking courses that you can later receive credit for.
Courses are taught by experts, and you work on real-world projects. Rutgers University offers a MasterTrack certificate in supply chain excellence. The University of Illinois offers an Instructional Design certificate.
The intensive nature of these programmes means they are more expensive and typically take longer to complete (four to eight months in most cases).
You can also earn an online degree through Coursera. Through Coursera, you can earn an online degree just as you would on campus, with highly legitimate credentials that you can earn credit for elsewhere if you wish. These degrees are awarded by accredited partner institutions such as Macquarie University and Arizona State University.
The cost of these courses is much higher, but still lower than what you would pay on campus.
Subjects offered by Coursera include computer science, business, data science, and public health. However, it’s not just these subjects that are offered. There are also online MBA programmes and courses to help you get ahead in the healthcare field. The possibilities are endless!
How to Choose Courses on Coursera?
You may find it difficult to choose between the more than 4,000 different course offerings on Coursera.
There are many online courses from companies and universities around the world that consist of reading materials, video lectures, assignments, and discussion forums.
You should decide whether you want to take a free course or pay for a membership to get access to additional benefits (such as extra video lectures, bonus materials, and other resources).
To access the certificate, most participants upgrade to the paid membership. You can add this certificate to your LinkedIn profile or resume to show that you have taken the time to learn new skills.
To join a free course, all you have to do is create an account, sign up and start the course. There are some that start immediately so you can work at your own pace, while others have set enrollment times – make sure you meet the requirements when you sign up.
Before you sign up for the course, you will need to register for the paid membership and provide your credit card information.

What Do You Need to Enroll in a Course on Coursera?
If you are enrolled in a Coursera course, you may only need an email address to enrol.
The host university requires an application for courses.
The institution’s deadlines, requirements, fees, etc. must be met before you can apply for admission.
The university enrols you, but Coursera provides the learning platform through which you can access the course material
How to Find the Best Coursera Courses?
Coursera has excellent built-in filtering tools, which I particularly appreciate. With just a few clicks, you can find the perfect course for you. By selecting skills, job titles, levels, languages, types, and creators, you can refine the courses you see.
Taking a Coursera course is not limited by language barriers, either. Many of the English courses include subtitles in multiple languages, including Spanish, Arabic, and more. See the course description page for details, along with details about:
- Duration
- Level
- Deadlines
- Whether it’s part of a specialization or a degree
Once you find a course you are interested in, click on the link for more details. At the top of the page you will see the partner institution, the number of evaluations, the number of students enrolled, the average time required, and a course evaluation. All of the courses I researched received at least 4.5 stars.
The course schedule can also be viewed. It includes a suggested completion time for each section, divided into weeks. The weekly schedule also includes a list of videos and resources that will be covered. You can adjust the lessons and deadlines to fit your schedule, even if there is a suggested start date.
You can find the instructor’s profile by clicking on the link further down the page. Personally, I felt this section could have used a few more details, but there were links you could view if you were interested.
The course pages also include:
- FAQs
- Skills you’ll learn
- Stats on student success, including career benefits
Coursera provides the information you need to make an informed decision about which courses to take. The course description page was a little too long and I lost interest after a while.
Who is Coursera For?
Students who want to earn a degree or learn new skills but need flexibility and affordability should consider Coursera. Online and offline learning are available with degrees, certificates, and specializations.
Individuals who work part-time or full-time, single parents, and students who want to save money on their education can benefit from this program.
What is Coursera’s Content Quality?
You can count on Coursera to provide you with quality information from qualified teachers. Coursera teachers are all subject matter experts who come from top universities and companies like IBM and Google.
The courses have high production value because they are produced in-house and not recorded by the teachers themselves. Lessons are broken down into easily digestible lessons with videos, reading material, quizzes, etc.
You can also follow along with an interactive transcript while watching the video, which is convenient for those who can better absorb the information this way.
What are the Pros of Coursera?
1. Fast learning
If you sign up for a Classra course, you can complete it in a short time.
It’s not quite the same experience as taking classes on campus, but you can progress and graduate much faster than if you took classes the traditional way (and it’s much cheaper).
However, you can also complete your degree over a longer period of time if that’s best for you. You do not have to quit your job or leave your hometown to complete a degree or a single course. This is an important advantage of Coursera.
2. A large selection of courses
On Coursera, you can choose from thousands of courses. Almost every topic is covered by the platform, although some niches dominate (e.g., business and technology). Some courses you can attend or enroll in for free.
3. Expert-level training
I have mentioned it several times in this Coursera review, but I think Coursera has one of the best features – you learn from instructors who really know their stuff. That’s not the case with all MOOCs.
In fact, many of these courses are taught by people who have no background in the subject they are teaching.
As a result, you may not be able to learn the material as well as you would like. Coursera is different. The courses at Coursera are taught by professionals, so you do not have to worry about getting a poor education.
4. Assignments and lectures that are short and sweet
Coursera’s video assignments and lectures are also excellently structured. The courses are generally well organised and engaging.
Because the instructors are knowledgeable in their respective subjects and the scholarly video lectures are short (most last less than half an hour), you can get to the point quickly – and then go about your busy day.
5. Interactive Coursera Platform
I have taken courses on other platforms before, and one of the things I do not like is the fact that many platforms are passive.
If you take a course on your own time and on your own terms, that’s good for scheduling, but it can also cause you to go on autopilot during the course.
With Coursera, that’s not the case. It allows you to move through the course material faster and easier, but it also allows you to interact more with the material and other learners.
Although Coursera does not offer discussion forums, you have plenty of opportunities to discuss the material with your classmates, take quizzes, and talk to your instructors about the material.
6. Certificates From Coursera
Among the few online course platforms that allow you to earn certificates that you can use for your career, Coursera is one of the best.
There are many platforms that offer a certificate feature, but these certificates are often meaningless and do not lead to progress in the field.
However, a Coursera certificate can open new doors for you. You may be able to get credit for this course at a college, especially if you are pursuing a MasterTrack or degree.
As more universities join the platform, the recognition of these courses will increase.
7. Courses from a real university, accessible to everyone
Coursera makes real courses from renowned universities accessible to almost everyone.
Regardless of whether you can afford to pay anything, you can attend the same lectures and readings as a student at Princeton University, Sciences Po, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, and many other prestigious institutions.
In addition, private companies such as Google, IBM and Autodesk offer courses where you can acquire specific skills for professional development.
Although the Coursera platform needs improvement, its structure is solid and easy to navigate. The company makes education accessible with its Editors’ Choice selection.
What are the Cons of Coursera?
1. Application Process Takes Time
Students find Coursera frustrating because they cannot simply select a course, pay the fee, and enroll immediately. To enroll in a particular program, you must first apply.
This means a certain amount of waiting time. Although this takes a fraction of the time it would take you to apply and be accepted to a regular college, it is a disadvantage that many students consider.
2. Discussion boards are not the best
In many MOOCs, learners and instructors can exchange ideas about the course and related topics in discussion forums.
Although most Coursera courses include this feature, the vast majority of evaluations of Coursera courses describe it as underwhelming. This is especially true for larger courses that are available at any time.
As with many other online courses and platforms, there is little interaction between you and your instructors on Coursera.
There’s a chance you’ll have better luck taking a longer Coursera course that requires you to log in at specific times, but most of the time you’ll only interact with your instructors occasionally.
Feedback is not always to be expected either. Although you have the option to upgrade and pay for graded assignments, that’s not always something you get (at least not extensively).
With this system, you will not necessarily get the feedback you want on your assignments.
3. Only certain niches offer a larger variety of course options
Coursera seems to be dominated by certain niches as is the case with many MOOCs. It seems that technology, business, and personal development are more popular than the humanities (like language learning).
4. Limited opportunities for assessment
Do not expect your instructor to give you pages and pages of feedback after you complete an assignment. Coursera will not do that.
You will write assignments and receive feedback, but it will not be as intense as in a regular course. You can even grade the assignments yourself.
5. Fees for Coursera Plus are steep
Coursera Plus is a good option if you want to specialize in multiple areas. However, many people find the price to be quite high.
The high subscription price of $399 per year is a deterrent for many, but it might also give you an incentive to take more courses so you can take full advantage of the program!
How To Open A Coursera Account?
It’s really easy to sign up with Coursera. If you are not sure how to sign up, I have broken it down into these steps:
Coursera sign up
- Visit www.coursera.org in your browser
- To join for free, click the Join for Free button in the top right corner
- Create a password, enter your full name, and add your email
- A confirmation email will be sent to you
Once you have logged in, you can view the different courses available by clicking Explore.
You can select the subject or learning program you are interested in and then select a subcategory to find all relevant courses.
Is Coursera Accredited And Recognized?
Are you the first person to ask if Coursera is recognized and accredited? Many of us (myself included) are confused about this question.
What is accreditation?
To be accredited, a college or college offering a course or learning program must be approved by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the Department of Education.
It is important to learn about your state’s accreditation standards before deciding on the purpose of the course or learning program you want to take.
Apple and Microsoft must work with training institutions that are accredited to deliver their courses. Therefore, they have the right to teach, test, and certify students for a technology company course or program.
Therefore, upon completion of a course, program, or degree, the student will receive an official certification.
Does Coursera have accreditation?
Although Coursera’s platform is not accredited by CHEA or the Department of Education, many of the courses and learning programs offered are.
Before choosing a course or learning program from Coursera, you should first understand the difference between the different types of courses and learning programs. You can choose from six different learning programs.
Individual Courses:
When you register for a Coursera course, you can choose one of two options. You can audit the course (learn for free) or earn a Coursera certificate when you successfully complete the course. Your name, course title, and the logo of the university offering the course will appear on the certificate. You must check FAQ to see if the course applies toward a degree or credit. This certificate is not an official transcript or qualification from the university.
Guided Projects:
These are quick (usually less than two hours) and inexpensive ways to fill the gap in an area where you lack knowledge. In addition to a shareable certificate of completion, you will also receive individual learning materials that are not accredited.
Specializations:
A combination of related courses on a particular topic that function similarly to individual courses.
You either pay a one-time fee or it is included in your monthly subscription. Your name, the name of the course, and the university logo will appear on your certificate upon completion of the specialisation.
As with an individual course, you will need to check with the course FAQ to see if it can count toward a credit or degree programme. It is not an official document of the university.
Professional Certificate:
The courses are the Coursera version of industry-recognized certifications. They follow the certification curricula of Microsoft, Google, and IBM.
Your certificate will include your name, course title, and company logo, similar to the certificates for individual courses and specializations.
MasterTrack Certificate
Just as specializations are a series of courses but with a fixed start and end date, these programs can count toward a college degree. These credits can be applied to your degree program. The college will issue you a certificate, which is an official document from the accredited institution.
Degree Programs
If you successfully complete the programme at Coursera, you will receive an official transcript with your final grade from the university as well as your official certificate of completion.
Basically, it’s important that:
- You enroll in the right course or learning program for your needs
- If you are applying to a University, contact them first to find out what requirements they require
- Be aware that not all certificates are authentic
- Before committing to a course, read the FAQ’s
In addition, Coursera’s courses and learning programs are cost-effective and will help you expand your knowledge and add another skill to your CV or resume.

A Coursera for Teams subscription costs $399 per user per year with a 14-day refund guarantee, whereas Coursera for Teams is intended for smaller businesses.
Coursera for teams
With each of these plans, you can set your own deadlines and award certifications based on when courses are completed. In addition to Loreal, Danone, and P&G, Courseera has worked with several smaller companies as well.
Financial Assistance
A scholarship or financial aid may be available if you can’t afford to pay for a course. On the course homepage, you’ll find the application link.
In addition to your educational background, career goals, and financial situation, you will need to fill out an application. Financial aid is usually available for most courses.
Compared With Coursera, How Much Do Other Learning Courses Cost?
Because Coursera’s prices vary depending on the program you sign up for, it’s difficult to compare them to other learning sites. Most courses are free, and many others are available for around $49, which seems very reasonable.
In comparison, Udacity’s price is higher, typically ranging from $339-$399 per month for Nanodegree courses. The average duration of a Nanodegree course is three to four months, and the cost per course ranges from $1,017 to $1,356. Udacity offers some courses for free, but the free courses generally do not come with certificates, as Coursera does.
Udacity also partners with companies like Google and IBM to offer courses that teach skills that these companies want and need.
Professional development courses are also available on sites like LinkedIn Learning and Skillshare. These two in particular offer courses on soft skills, such as business management, as well as tutorials on specific computer programs, such as Photoshop and InDesign.
The monthly fee for Skillshare is $32 or $168 per year. LinkedIn Learning, however, cannot be purchased independently. You need a paid LinkedIn account to access it, which costs about $240 to $576 per year.
With a paid LinkedIn account, you have access to additional job search, networking and recruiting tools.
What are the Coursera Partnerships?
A variety of universities, corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organisations partner with Coursera. A number of these institutions are personally contacted by Coursera to work with them.
Whenever Coursera partners with an institution, it is not clear what the terms are, but I would assume they vary from institution to institution. If you are interested in learning more, please fill out the university or industry partnership request form.
Individuals can also partner with Coursera and become project leaders, as they do with institutions. This role involves creating guided projects.
Benefits include:
- Growth: Sharing your expertise through real-world projects to build your career and reputation.
- Resources: Get support and tools to create high-quality projects by joining the instructor community.
- Income: Earn money on a per-project basis if your project is approved.
- Impact: Help learners gain valuable career skills around the world with your expertise.
Coursera Review From The Learner’s Perspective
Courses are usually divided into weeks, but the great thing about this division is that it is not set in stone. You can take the course at your own pace.
Depending on your schedule and needs, you can complete a five-week course in five weeks, five days, or seven weeks!
In addition to news, resources, discussion forums, a note-taking app, and much more, you as a learner will have access to other resources as well.
You can take notes while watching video lectures and even watch video lectures with subtitles to better understand them.
Coursera Review From The Instructor’s Perspective
You must be employed by a partner institution to teach a course on Coursera. Unlike other MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platforms, you cannot teach, upload, or offer a course yourself on this platform.
The quality of Coursera’s courses is extremely high, as the company sets its own high standards. To become a top teacher, you need to have a lot of experience with itching and attending seminars.
Is Coursera Worth It?
What are the pros and cons of Coursera for online learning? It depends. Despite the low cost of auditing courses (i.e., free), the cost of certification can be high, depending on the field of study.
Fiverr Learn is less expensive and offers a handy badge if you want to improve your marketing skills. Udemy, on the other hand, is worth a look if you just want to learn and do not care that your instructors are experts.
You can also use LinkedIn Learning as a Coursera alternative, as it’s free if you have a premium account.
Coursera’s wide selection of courses, low price, and interactive teaching methods make it a good choice for online learning and skill development. In my opinion, it’s worth giving it a try!
