Early Life

Carol Creighton Burnett was born in San Antonio, Texas, on April 26, 1933, to Joseph and Ina Louise Burnett. Burnett moved to Hollywood, California, with her grandmother, Mabel Eudora White, after her parents divorced in the late 1930s. She graduated from Hollywood High School in 1951.

Burnett left school early as an aspiring playwright at the University of California, Los Angeles, and moved to New York City with her boyfriend, Don Saroyan, in the hopes of breaking into acting.

Early Career

Burnett made her first television appearance in the early 1950s on The Winchell-Mahoney Show, a children’s television show. Soon after, she began co-starring in the sitcom Stanley with Buddy Hackett (1956-57). Burnett joined The Garry Moore Show as a regular in 1959. She was also featured on a few CBS specials over the years. She was already a well-known performer when she got her own comedy-variety show, The Carol Burnett Show, in 1967.

‘The Carol Burnett Show’

The Carol Burnett Show typically began with a question-and-answer session with the audience, followed by broad comedy skits and sketches, with Burnett using her expressive face to great comic effect. The show aired for 11 seasons before being cancelled in 1978. Burnett returned to television in 1990 with Carol & Company, followed by The Carol Burnett Show in 1991. Neither effort, however, lasted long.

Burnett co-wrote the play with her eldest daughter, Carrie Hamilton.

Recent Projects

Burnett received a one-of-a-kind honor in 2009. One of her costumes from The Carol Burnett Show has been added to the Smithsonian’s American History Museum collection. The gown chosen was from her well-known spoof of Gone With the Wind. The following year, she published her autobiography This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection, which looked back on her career.

Burnett also appeared as a guest on the hit TV show Desperate Housewives in 2006, as well as on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Glee in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Burnett has appeared in theaters across the country in recent years. Each performance is an unscripted event in which Burnett interacts with the audience. The question and answer session she used to do at the beginning of each episode of The Carol Burnett Show inspired this style of show.

Burnett received one of the highest honors bestowed upon comedians in 2013. At the Kennedy Center Honors that October, she was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Tina Fey was among those who attended the event to honor Burnett’s work. Fey told Burnett, according to the Huffington Post, “I fell in love with sketch comedy watching your show, and you proved sketch comedy is a good place for women.” Burnett was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors a few months later, in 2013.
