Audrey Johnston was born on July 11, 1924, in New Brunswick, Canada, and grew up in Portland, Maine. She ran away from home at the age of 17 and settled in New York City’s Greenwich Village. She renamed herself Brett after the main female character in Ernest Hemingway’s novel The Sun Also Rises. Her mother’s maiden name was Somers. She also became a citizen of the United States.

In 1958, Somers made her Broadway debut in Maybe Tuesday, a flop play that also starred future TV star Alice Ghostley, who played Esmeralda on Bewitched. She was a lifetime member of the Actors Studio and appeared in Happy Ending, The Seven Year Itch, and The Country Girl with her husband Jack Klugman.

Television Work

Somers appeared frequently on early television shows such as The Philco Television Playhouse, Kraft Television Theatre, Playhouse 90, and Robert Montgomery Presents. She rose to prominence in the 1970s as a regular on the popular game show Match Game. Contestants would try to match answers to nonsense questions posed by a panel of celebrities including Somers, Fannie Flag, Richard Dawson, and Charles Nelson Reilly, hosted by Gene Rayburn. Somers’ quick-witted quips earned her a spot on the show’s celebrity panel.

Somers married and had a daughter, Leslie, after moving to New York, before divorcing her first husband. She married Klugman, the actor best known for his roles in the television shows The Odd Couple and Quincy, in 1953. Adam and David were their two sons.

Blanche Madison, the ex-wife of Klugman’s character, sloppy sports writer Oscar Madison, was played by Somers in several episodes of The Odd Couple. After appearing on Match Game during the first week of its run, Klugman also recommended Somers as a panelist. The couple appeared frequently on talk shows such as The Mike Douglas Show (1961), The Tonight Show (1962), He Said, She Said (1969), and Match Game (1970). (1973).

In 1974, Somers and Klugman divorced. Although it was widely reported that they never divorced, California court records show that they divorced in 1977.

Later Career and Death

An Evening with Brett Somers, a critically acclaimed one-woman cabaret show, was written, co-produced, and performed by Somers in the summer of 2003. After being diagnosed with cancer, she continued to perform.

Somers reunited onstage with Jack Klugman in Danger, People at Large, three short comedies performed at Fairfield University in 2005. It was the former couple’s first performance together in three decades.

Somers’ cancer had been in remission until 2007, when it returned in an inoperable form. Brett Somers died on September 15, 2007, at her home in Westport, Connecticut, of stomach and colon cancer.
