Early Life

Brad Grey was born in the Bronx to Jewish parents, the youngest son of a clothing salesman. He studied at the College of Buffalo.

During his studies he became the “jack of all trades” for the young Harvey Weinstein, who then became a concert promoter. The first event Grey produced at the age of 20 was a Frank Sinatra concert at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in 1978.

On weekends, Grey traveled to Manhattan to see new comedians at the Improv. He brought comedian Bob Saget to New York. Grey made Saget his first client.

Career

In 1984, Grey received a career boost when he met manager Bernie Brillstein at a television convention in San Francisco. They teamed up and formed Brillstein-Grey Entertainment in 1986. Grey was executive producer of the sitcom It’s Garry Shandling’s Show.

In 2001, he co-founded Plan B Entertainment with Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. In 2005, Grey left Plan B and Brillstein Entertainment to become CEO of Paramount. Here he oversaw the entire feature film division, with successful formats including Transformers, Paranormal Activity, Star Trek and Iron Man.

From 1986 to 1990, he was the producer of It’s Garry Shandling’s Show, and from 1992 to 1998, the producer of The Larry Sanders Show, which also starred comedian Garry Shandling.

From 1999 to 2007 he was the producer of The Sopranos, and from 2003 he was the producer of the show for HBO: Real Time with Bill Maher.

From 2005 to February 2017, Grey headed the film studio Paramount Pictures, where he succeeded Sherry Lansing. In that year, his film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was released. In 2006, Running with Scissors.

Grey died of cancer at the age of 59.
