Bobby Seale was born on October 22, 1936, in Dallas, Texas, as the oldest of three children. Seale grew up in poverty with an abusive father, and the family brought their struggles with them when they relocated to California. Seale went to Berkeley High School, and it was during this time that he became politically aware.
Seale enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955, but was discharged in 1959 after an altercation with a superior officer. Seale met Huey Newton at a rally protesting the Kennedy administration’s blockade of Cuba in September 1962.
The pair quickly became friends, and that year saw the emergence of Seale’s political radicalism, which was strengthened when Seale attended a speech given by Malcolm X.
The Black Panthers
Seale and Newton were ready to organize their beliefs by 1966, when they founded the Black Panthers (later renamed the Black Panther Party). Founded as an armed force to protect the black community from the notoriously racist Oakland police, the Panthers’ reputation grew, as did the organization’s scope.
The Panthers became a new voice in the Civil Rights Movement, rejecting both the mainstream movement’s nonviolent approach and the more radical Black Nationalists’ “Back to Africa” teachings outright.
The Panthers devoted much of their energy to community service, and the California movement spawned chapters all over the country. Seale decided that a public account of the Panthers’ formation and history was needed by 1968, so he wrote Seize the Time: The Story of the Black Panther Party and Huey P. Newton (published in 1970).
Seale was arrested the same year while protesting at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He and seven other defendants, dubbed the “Chicago Seven,” were tried for conspiracy to incite riots in a circus-like setting, and Seale was sentenced to four years in prison for contempt of court.
During this time, Seale was also tried for the murder of a fellow Panther suspected of being a police informant. The jury was deadlocked at the end of the trial.
After his release from prison, Seale renounced violence as a means to an end and began reorganizing the Panthers, which had fallen into disarray during his absence. In 1973, he also ran for mayor of Oakland, finishing second among nine candidates.
But Seale soon tired of politics and turned back to writing. In 1978 he published A Lonely Rage and in 1987 a cookbook titled Barbeque’n with Bobby.
In 2002, Seale moved back to Oakland to work with young political activists and instigate social change. He has been married twice and has one child.
