Bobby Flay was born Robert William Flay in New York City on December 10, 1964, and was raised on Manhattan’s Upper East Side by divorced parents Bill and Dorothy Flay, Irish-Americans who gave their son red hair and freckles. Flay had a natural talent for cooking from a young age. He made his mother’s grocery lists, made complex after-school snacks, and even asked for an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas. He was, however, noticeably less enthusiastic about school. Flay attended a number of parochial schools before dropping out at the age of 17.
His first professional restaurant job came shortly after he graduated from high school in 1982.
