Early Life and Education
William Sanford Nye, better known as “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” was born on November 27, 1955, in Washington, D.C., to Jacqueline and Edwin Darby Nye. Nye’s mother, who was gifted in math and science, was recruited to work as a codebreaker during WWII. His father was imprisoned in a Japanese POW camp for four years without electricity. Edwin became a sundial enthusiast as a result of his experience, and his son followed in his footsteps.
Nye attended the private Sidwell Friends School before enrolling at Cornell University to study mechanical engineering. Nye went on to begin his career at The Boeing Company in Seattle, where he would live for many years after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree. Nye invented a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor, which is still used in Boeing 747s today.
After winning a Steve Martin look-alike contest, Nye got his start in comedy and went on to work as an engineer by day and a stand-up comic by night. He eventually quit his day job to pursue a career as a comedy writer and performer on the show Almost Live. It was during this time that he earned the moniker “the Science Guy.”
‘Bill Nye the Science Guy’
Soon after, Seattle’s PBS station KCTS-TV produced Bill Nye the Science Guy, an educational television show that aired from September 10, 1993 to June 20, 1998. The show, which aimed to teach science to a preteen audience, was hosted by Nye, and each of the 100 episodes focused on a specific topic, making them valuable resources for schools. The show won 19 Emmy Awards during its five-year run, with Nye receiving seven for writing, performing, and producing.
‘The Eyes of Nye’ to ‘Dancing with the Stars’
Nye went on to work on other television shows after the show ended, including The Eyes of Nye, a science show aimed at an older audience, and the Planet Green Network’s Stuff Happens program. He also hosted the 100 Greatest Discoveries show and began appearing in videos for Walt Disney World and Epcot attractions, including one with Ellen DeGeneres.
Nye has appeared in a Disney film as a science teacher and on the television crime drama Numb3rs.
He also appeared on Larry King Live several times to discuss global warming, one of his favorite topics, and space exploration. Nye took on a different type of television role in 2013, when she joined the cast of celebrity contestants on the popular show Dancing with the Stars.
‘Bill Nye Saves the World’
In 2017, Nye launched Bill Nye Saves the World, a Netflix show that explores science topics that affect everyday life and invites celebrity guest speakers and experts to participate in the discussions.
Nye has written several science-related children’s books in addition to his television shows. In 2014, he published Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, followed by Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World the following year. He released Everything All at Once in 2017, promising to demonstrate how “thinking like a nerd is the key to changing yourself and the world around you.”
Science and Space
Nye works as a scientist when he is not acting, appearing on TV and film, or writing. He assisted in the development of sundials used in the Mars Exploration Rover missions in the early 2000s. From 2005 to 2010, he was the vice president and then the second executive director of The Planetary Society, one of the world’s largest space-interest organizations.
Nye became the face of “Bill Nye’s Climate Lab,” a permanent exhibition at Oakland, California’s Chabot Space & Science Center. He is also a member of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, a non-profit scientific and educational organization dedicated to encouraging scientific inquiry and critical thinking: Nye has stated that he is concerned about scientific illiteracy and wishes to assist in the teaching of the use of reason when examining controversial and extraordinary claims.
Nye made headlines for a video posted to YouTube on August 23, 2012, in which he explains how the United States’ denial of evolution is generally unique in comparison to the rest of the world’s advanced nations. “People continue to migrate to the United States, and this is largely due to the intellectual capital we have, the general understanding of science,” Nye says in the video. “When there is a segment of the population that does not believe in that, it holds everyone back.”
Nye was the Frank H. T. Rhodes Visiting Professor at Cornell for several years. He has received honorary doctorates from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Goucher College, and Johns Hopkins University.
