Bill Gates Success Story – His Business Lessons and Daily Routine

He is the synonym for a wealthy person. He is the creator of a software empire. He ruled the world for 18 years as the world’s richest person. With a net worth of $90 billion (2019), he is the second richest man in the world. Even if he spent $60 million each day, it would take another 218 years to spend his money.

He is none other than William Henry Gates, III, the principal founder of Microsoft Corporation. He is also an American business magnate, author, philanthropist, investor, and humanitarian. Though he is wealthy, Bill Gates is a very simple person and socializes very well with everyone.

On June 17, 2008, Gates resigned as the full-time chairman of Microsoft and got more involved with the activities of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He was born on October 28, 1955. At birth, he was considerably wealthy. His father was a lawyer and his grandfather owned a bank. From his childhood he was fascinated with mathematics and computers.

He wrote a program for a game called tic-tac-toe when he was just thirteen years old. When he was in high school, owing to his creativity, he got the job of writing the computer code to schedule the classes. He abused his job slightly to find out which section of his class had beautiful girls and enrolled himself in that section. In a similar way, he would also get his attendance roll number next to beautiful girls.

Because of his passion for computers he failed eleventh grade. In high school he befriended Paul Allen, who was also passionate about computers. Whenever they found free time, they would spend time together on computer programming. Gates’ parents wanted him to become a lawyer, but his passion was in computers. To fulfill his parents wish, he enrolled at Harvard University.

On his SAT exam, he scored 1590 out of 1600. Bill Gates met his wife Melinda at work. Before getting married, they dated for seven years. In 1993 they got engaged and traveled to Africa. It was during this trip, on seeing the extreme poverty, that they started to talk about how they could help needy people. They got married in 1994 in Hawaii, at the Manele Bay Hotel.

The Microsoft story

One day while he was at Harvard, he happened upon a copy of the magazine Popular Electronics. On the cover page there was a picture of the Altair 8800 computer. He learned that the company Altair was looking for a software to run the computer.

He and Paul Allen realized that this was the right time to prove their caliber. They met with representatives from the company and told them that they would develop the required software to run their computers. They worked day and night for two months at the Harvard computer center.

The software worked very well on the Altair computer. It was a revolution in the computer industry. Both young men became very popular, and the occasion, in the year 1975, afforded them the opportunity to start their company, Microsoft. In the mid-1980s IBM, which then sold the most computers, asked Gates to develop an operating system for their computers.

To develop an operating system for IBM, Gates bought an existing operating system for $50,000 and made modifications to it, and delivered it to IBM with the name MS-DOS operating system. From then onwards there was no looking back for the company.

Within a few days Microsoft became a billion dollar company. Gates was not simply influential in the world of computers because of his brilliance in programming; he also shook up the status quo by arguing against the open-source methodology that largely governed the development of code. In his mind, “continued distribution and use of software without paying for it would ‘prevent good software from being written’”.

In a few years he had introduced Microsoft Windows into the market. Microsoft Windows was a milestone in the history of computing. With the broad exposure of Microsoft Windows, Bill Gates put his signature on the mainstream computer culture.

Microsoft software was inevitable for nearly any system. It was Bill Gates’ wish to become a millionaire by the age of 30, but he became a billionaire by the age of 31. At that time, 95% of the computer operating system market belonged to Microsoft. And many companies filed a suit, saying that Microsoft had created a monopoly by not allowing any other operating system to be launched in the market.

The cases ran for a long time. But, Gates was undeterred. More success came with the dawn of the internet age. Internet Explorer, Microsoft’s search engine, helped blaze the trail into the worldwide web. Microsoft was ideally positioned for the dawning of the age of widespread personal computing.

That Internet Explorer is today a laughable tool is no disparagement to Gates’ ingenuity but rather an indication of the fast-moving pace of the software industry.

Bill Gates’s Daily Routine

Bill Gates’ daily routine is often busy and varied. He travels around the world and launches new creations. According to The New York Times, Gates’ daily routine starts with exercise. He does exercise for one hour in his private gym. Sometimes he likes to watch educational DVDs while exercising at the gym.

Breakfast mostly takes a backseat. He normally skips breakfast as he eagerly starts his day. If he eats anything, he prefers to eat Cocoa Puffs. He reads the newspaper and keeps himself updated on current affairs. He reads The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

He also reads The Economist, a weekly magazine. Most of his working hours are spent reading emails and attending meetings. In his office room, in three computers the email inbox is always kept open. In one system current reading email opens. He reads all important mails in the morning and all unknown mails are filtered by his assistant. In his busy schedule, he keeps track of his plans and ideas by making a note of them.

He breaks down his schedule into five-minute plans and thus plans every moment very carefully. He prefers to sleep for 7 hours every night. He says he can sleep for less than 7 hours and still give speeches and go about his daily routine. But, when creative thinking is required, he says it is a must for him to have his 7 hours of sleep.

The apps and equipment used by Bill Gates are SharePoint, OneNote, tablet PC and desktop search software. He also makes use of a whiteboard when required. He loves to eat cheeseburgers for lunch. He washes the dishes every night. Spending time with his family is one thing he enjoys a lot.

He also loves to play bridge on the weekends. He prefers spending time with his kids when he is not working or reading. He likes touring unusual locations like missile silos and electric plants along with his son who also likes learning with him. By the end of the day he prefers to check his email. He does not like to miss even one email.

Lessons From Bill Gates

1. You need a lot of energy

If you need to take a company from ground zero upwards, you need a lot of energy. To shake off doubts and avoid the trap of trying to meet the expectations of others, you need a lot of energy. Even more importantly, you need to start your career well.

If you want to start your entrepreneurial career and you do not understand how to start it, the energy in you will subside. At that time you should react and decide on which business field you want to start your career, and work in that field first and consider this work as a training for your business.

When you are confident that you have gained the required experience, then re- energize for your business career. But do not continue with your job if you like it, as all the dreams you had dreamt of about your own business career, would become a daydream. So if you want to move from your job to your business, you need more energy. Only then you will succeed in your business.

2. You need a bad influence

You should have a bad influence occasionally. This does not mean that you should be in the company of people who will teach you bad habits. People who love you will not tell you to try new tasks or take risks. But, there are some companions who will encourage you to take risks.

Such people bring you out of your comfort zone. They motivate you to grow and improve. When you fail, everyone will say that they were a bad influence on you. But when you are successful, such people will not be visible to others. That is why Gates calls them a bad influence. You need such bad influences to develop your risk-taking capability.

3. You can’t be afraid of hard work

If you want to achieve something, you have to do a lot of hard work. There is no specific measurement of that hard work. You must simply expect to work very hard. If you want to become an entrepreneur, your work hours will not be limited to 9 AM to 5 PM. In your life, the main focus should be only on your business.

Though you try to balance your work and family life carefully, you should keep telling your family members how important your work is to you. You should work with complete concentration on your work. Thomas Alva Edison said “Success is in fact, 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” So if you want to achieve something, you have no other option but to work hard. You don’t have any other choice.

4. You create your future

Never consider your work as a job for the present, learn to consider it as creating your future. Time will keep moving and you cannot stop it. So you have to do something that will not fade away with time. You have to come up with new innovative ideas that will be remembered for generations to come.

There are some ideas which may be useful in the current scenario, but may not work in the future. So always come up with ideas, with a long-term view.

5. You need to love what you do

Difficulties and challenges are a reality, and you must accept them. In the same way, you should love the work you do every day and the colleagues who work with you. If you do not love the work you do, you will not be able to work on it for the long run. That is why you should love the work you do. If you work for money, you will be able to earn money alone. But, if you love the work you do, you will never feel that you are working hard but instead you enjoy your work.

6. Seek advice from smart people

If you have intelligent and hardworking people around you, you will achieve success in a shorter time. Not only should you befriend such people, but you should also take advice from them, when required. You may be uncertain in some areas. So it is advisable to have people in your friend circle who can advise you in your weak areas. You must take their help only when it is required and not always.

Bill Gates always maintained an inner council. All important decisions were made at a meeting with this inner council. The same ideology is followed even by Satya Nadella, the current CEO of Microsoft. Whenever any product is to be launched or whenever a new course of action is required, he calls for a meeting with his senior leadership team.

7. Choose good people to work with

The most important precaution an entrepreneur should take is during recruitment. You should be very careful while recruiting employees. Hire only those people who believe in your ideology and commit to you. In the same way, hire only those people who understand your vision completely and stay with you.

The qualities to be possessed by the person whom you hire are critical thinking skills and the position’s required skill set (it should not be the same skill set as yours because there should always be the trait to complement each other and not to compete with each other).

If that person has some other skill set, it will be more useful for your business. If you hire the right employees, you will not only be a success, but you will also enjoy going to work.

8. If you are a procrastinator, stop now

Not only for an entrepreneur, but every individual should never have the habit of postponing their work. Postponing your work and doing it in the last minute will only deteriorate the quality of your work. That is why you have to put a halt to procrastination. It is only when you are organized and complete your work before the deadline that you are able to step forward towards success.

9. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself

Bill Gates is easygoing and friendly with his friends and colleagues. He says humor is the key to his happy life. He says if anyone jokes about you, you have to take it good-naturedly and proceed forward. Only then your mood will be
more positive.

10. Read books whenever you are free

However busy he may be, Bill Gates always makes time to read books. He believes in continual self-education. Anybody can read good books and learn good things from them. Gates gives reviews about the books he reads in his blog on the YouTube channel. He also advises which books are worth reading on social media. When you read a book, your brain gets rewired. It will grasp new things.
