Early Life and Family

Isabella Khair Hadid was born in Washington, D.C., on October 9, 1996. Hadid’s father, Mohamed Hadid, is an architect and real estate developer. Her mother, Yolanda Hadid, is a former model who starred on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Hadid grew up with an older sister, Gigi, and a younger brother, Anwar, both of whom are also models. In addition, Hadid has two older half-sisters, Alana and Marielle, from a previous relationship with her father.

Hadid’s mother left the Netherlands at age 16 for the United States; her father was a refugee from Palestine who also came to the United States at a young age. Hadid, who declared, “I am proud to be Muslim,” grew up celebrating Eid and Ramadan. However, she noted in 2017, “As I got older, I worked and went to school, so I could not fast as long.”

Hadid’s parents separated in 2000, and her mother was married to music producer David Foster for part of Hadid’s childhood, but that marriage also fell apart.

Hadid described her childhood in California in a 2017 interview, “I grew up on a ranch in Santa Barbara, went to school during the day, then straight to the barn and rode my horses, ate dinner with my family every night at 6 p.m., did my homework and then went to sleep.” A talented equestrian, Hadid competed in weekend competitions from the time she was 3 years old until she was 15.

When she was 14, Hadid began working at a juice bar to earn her own money. At that age, she also started to dye her naturally blonde hair. The different shades helped Hadid make her own way as a model and stand out from her sister.

Modeling Career

After high school, Hadid left California to study photography at Parsons School of Design in New York City. By this time, her sister Gigi was already a successful model. Hadid modeled herself and soon came to believe that she was “learning more with photographers on set than in school.” She decided to leave school to focus on this career. In 2015, she made her runway debut for Tom Ford at New York City Fashion Week.

Hadid is proud of the fact that she became financially independent at the age of 18. She has appeared on numerous magazine covers and has contracts with Bulgari, Fendi and Dior Beauty.

Although they are in the same industry, there is no sibling rivalry between Hadid and her sister. In 2017, Hadid told Harper’s Bazaar, “Most of the time our markets are completely different, and when we get booked for a job and she gets it or I get it, we are both happy for each other.” In addition to having the support of Gigi and her mother, a former model, Hadid is also good friends with other supermodels like Kendall Jenner.

After appearing in a video for Love Magazine in 2018, Hadid was criticized online for looking too thin. She was also accused of not smiling enough. Hadid told InStyle, “When I first started modeling, it was so intense that I guess I just did not smile and I did not want to, and then it became a thing that I did not smile.” She explained that she was ashamed of her smile when she started modeling. There were also moments when she was not feeling well because of Lyme disease.

During her modeling career, Hadid has had more unpleasant experiences. In 2018, she had to call in the police when an alleged stalker showed up outside her New York City apartment. And while working for Victoria’s Secret, Hadid reportedly had to listen to objectifying comments about her body.

In 2019, Hadid admitted that modeling for Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty line was “the first time I felt really sexy on a runway,” adding, “I have been in other lingerie shows and never felt as powerful on a runway as I do in my underwear.”

In 2021, Hadid returned to a revamped Victoria’s Secret as part of the VS collective. She said she made that decision because she felt the company was evolving “not just in terms of body diversity, but in terms of diversity of women in general.”

Lyme Disease

In 2012, Hadid was diagnosed with Lyme disease, as were her mother and brother. The disease made horseback riding, a beloved activity of Hadid’s, much more difficult. Hadid has said that her symptoms worsened when she turned 18. She suffered from headaches, brain fog, insomnia, anxiety, eating disorders and joint pain. She also suffered from severe fatigue.

Speaking about her experience with Lyme disease in 2016, Hadid said, “Life is not always what it looks like from the outside, and the hardest part of this journey is being judged by how you look instead of how you feel.”

Social Media and Activism

Hadid has expressed a desire to use her celebrity for the benefit of others. She said in 2020, “I have so much responsibility to use my platform for good, especially as I get older.”

In January 2017, Hadid and her sister Gigi took part in a demonstration against then-President Donald Trump’s immigration ban and plans to build a border wall. She later explained, “My father was a refugee when he first came to America, so this is a heartfelt issue for my sister, brother and me.”

In 2019, Hadid announced that she would plant 600 trees to offset the carbon emissions caused by her air travel. When Israeli rockets hit Gaza in 2021, Hadid expressed her concern for the Palestinians on social media.

Bella paid $6.1 million for a penthouse condo in Soho, New York City, in November 2019. The property sold in March 2021 for $6.5 million.

A few blocks away, her sister Gigi owns two condos that were purchased for a combined $10 million. Gigi plans to combine the two apartments into one large flat.

Mental Health

In 2018, Hadid shared her experience with anxiety on her mother’s show, Making a Model with Yolanda Hadid. In 2019, she shared that as an 18-year-old starting her modeling career, she “cried every single morning, cried during lunch breaks, and cried before bed” because she had to please designers and photographers while working long hours.

Hadid once took a temporary hiatus from social media to protect her own mental health. In November 2021, she was back on social media when she responded to an Instagram post by Willow Smith about her insecurities. Hadid’s response showed her crying. She shared with her followers, “Self care and mental illness/chemical imbalance is not linear and it’s almost like a roller coaster ride with obstacles… It has its ups and downs and sides.”

Hadid entered into a relationship with musician The Weeknd in 2015 after he asked her to appear on the artwork for his album Beauty Behind the Madness.

The two worked together again when Hadid had a role in the music video for “In the Night.” They split in 2016 due to scheduling conflicts, but were romantically linked again in 2018.

In 2020, Hadid began a relationship with art director Marc Kalman.
