Early Life and Career
Aziz Ansari was born in Columbia, South Carolina on February 23, 1983. His parents immigrated to the United States from India, and he grew up in Bennettsville, South Carolina, a small southern town. Chris Rock was perhaps Ansari’s greatest comedic influence. “When I first started doing stand-up, he was the person I most wanted to be as a comedian, and I know his HBO specials by heart,” he told Giant.
Ansari moved to New York for college in 2000. He attended New York University’s Stern School of Business and studied marketing, but he also found time to perform. “By the time I was in my sophomore year, I was confident I could do well in comedy,” he told Advertising Age.
Ansari began hosting a comedy night called “Human Giant” at the UCB Theatre with Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel shortly after receiving his degree in 2004. This was the inspiration for the MTV comedy series, which aired for two seasons beginning in 2007.
‘Parks and Recreation’ and Other Screen Roles
Ansari debuted as local official Tom Haverford in Amy Poehler’s popular sitcom Parks and Recreation in 2009. That same year, he made a big impression on moviegoers with a scene-stealing small part in Judd Apatow’s Funny People. Ansari played Randy, a wild stand-up comedian in the film, which also starred Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen.
After headlining the arts and music festival Bonnaroo in 2010, Ansari co-starred in the 2011 crime comedy 30 Minutes or Less with Jesse Eisenberg. He has also lent his voice to the animated comedy Bob’s Burgers as the character Darryl since 2012.
With his fast-talking, high-energy humor, Ansari has already produced stand-up specials such as Aziz Ansari: Dangerously Delicious (2012), Aziz Ansari: Live in Madison Square Garden (2015) and Aziz Ansari: Right Now (2019).
‘Master of None’
Ansari debuted a new Netflix series not long after Parks and Recreation ended in 2015. With Alan Yang, he co-created and co-wrote the critically acclaimed sitcom Master of None. On the show, Ansari plays Dev, an actor who goes through the ups and downs of his romantic life and career.
Ansari won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2016, a feat he repeated the following year. For his work on Master of None, he became the first Asian actor to win a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy in early 2018.
Book: ‘Modern Romance’
In addition to TV, film, and stand-up work, Ansari found time to co-author a best-selling book about relationships, Modern Romance (2015), with sociologist Eric Klinenberg. He reportedly received a $3.5 million advance for the book.
An article published on babe.net shortly after Ansari’s Golden Globe win in January 2018 described a young woman’s unpleasant date with the actor, in which he ignored her “verbal and nonverbal cues” to rebuff his attempts to have sex.
Ansari quickly issued a statement in which he stated that he initially believed the sexual activity was consensual, but “took her words to heart” when he noticed his date was upset and later apologized.
Some saw the encounter as an example of the #MeToo movement going too far and ensnaring a man who, however awkwardly, was seeking intimacy. Others defended his date’s reaction to the events as they were described, mocking Ansari’s attempts to portray himself as pro-rights women’s by wearing a “Time’s Up” pin.
Despite being nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series at the Screen Actors Guild Awards that month, Ansari kept a low profile in the months that followed.
