Arvind Kejriwal was born on August 16, 1968, in Siwani, a village in Bhiwani district of Haryana. He is the eldest of three children in a well-to-do family. Her father, Gobind Ran Kejriwal, is an electrical engineer and her mother, Gita Kejriwal, a housewife who enjoyed an excellent education, which is exceptional since girls in her village were generally uneducated. His paternal grandfather, Mangal Chand Bansal, is a businessman who has started many businesses and is a wealthy landowner.
Encouraged by his mother, young Arvind Kejriwal’s academic achievements are brilliant; he is diligent and regularly finishes first in his class. After hesitating about a career as a doctor, he attended the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur. Unlike most of his classmates, he decided to stay in India throughout his studies.
After graduation, Kejriwal joined Tata Steel, a steel company in the Tata Group, in 1989. He resigned in 1991 and joined Mother Teresa at Nirmal Hriday Hospital in Kolkata. He stayed there for a month and then participated in various social works while waiting for the results of the administrative exams he had passed.
In August 1992, he joined the Indian Revenue Service, where he discovered the extent of widespread corruption when his supervisor told him that “you have to set aside enough money in the early years to be honest for the rest of your career.”
This book, which serves as a manifesto for the future movement, contains practical suggestions on what ordinary citizens, opinion makers, and the political establishment in India can do to create a political alternative or achieve genuine swaraj (self-determination).
The author’s central point is that power must shift from New Delhi and state capitals to village councils and urban communities so that people are directly empowered to make decisions about their own lives. A must-read for anyone who dreams of leaving a better India for the next generation.
