Early Career

Blank worked as a senior accountant for Arthur Young and Company after graduating from Babson College. Later, he resigned from his position at Arthur Young to work for the Daylin Corporation. Blank, who was talented and ambitious, quickly rose through the ranks to become president of Elliott’s Drug Stores/Stripe Discount Stores, a Daylin division.

When his division was sold, he went to work for another division, Handy Dan Home Improvement Centers, where Bernard Marcus was the CEO at the time. Blank reported to him as vice president of finance.

Arthur Blank was born on September 27, 1942, in Sunnyside, New York, USA, to Max and Molly Blank. Michael is the name of his brother. Max Blank supported his middle-class Jewish family by working as a pharmacist. Arthur attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City before attending Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1963.

In 1966, Blank married his first wife, philanthropist Diana Latow. Kenny Blank, Dena Blank Kimball, and Danielle Blank Thomsen are their three children. The couple divorced in 1993.

He met his second wife, North Carolina native and Appalachian State University graduate Stephanie Blank, when she worked as a designer for him at a Home Depot store in Atlanta. He has three children with her as well: Joshua Blank, Max Blank, and Kylie Blank. From 1995 to 2013, Blank and Stephanie were married. Blank married Angela Macuga, a social activist and marketing executive, in June 2016. Blank and Macuga announced that they were divorcing on January 1, 2019.

Blank announced on February 9, 2016, that he had prostate cancer, but that it was treatable. On March 17, 2016, he announced that the treatment was successful and that he was cancer-free.
