Arnel Pineda was born in Sampaloc, Manila, the Philippines, on September 5, 1967. Pineda had a string of bad luck throughout his childhood. His mother, who was 35 at the time, died when he was 13 years old after a long battle with heart disease. Pineda’s father could no longer provide for Pineda and his three younger brothers, Russmon, Roderick, and Joselito, because of her medical expenses.
While his brothers were cared for by relatives, Pineda was on his own. He spent the next few years homeless, often sleeping in public parks and scraping for any food or water he could get his hands on. He would stay at a friend’s house whenever possible, who offered him a cot outside. Pineda was eventually forced to drop out of school and work odd jobs such as collecting scrap metal and bottles at the pier and selling newspapers to support his family.
Pineda’s interest in music began at a young age. He began singing at the age of five and competed in numerous singing contests as a child. Pineda was introduced to a local band called Ijos when he was 15 years old, and his friends encouraged him to try out as their new lead singer.
He performed “Help” by the Beatles and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” by Air Supply. Despite his lack of training, Ijos members were blown away by Pineda’s powerful voice and hired him as the band’s new frontman. One of the band members’ friends even offered to pay Pineda’s salary, 35 pesos per night, out of his own pocket, and Pineda was offered a tiny room under the guitarist’s front stairs to sleep in.
In 1986, several members of Ijos formed the new pop-rock band Amo. The group achieved success by covering songs by hit groups such as Heart, Queen, and Journey. They made headlines in 1988 when they won the Philippines leg of the Yamaha World Band Explosion Contest. Despite being disqualified in the finals due to a technicality, the event was broadcast on Asian television, expanding their fan base. The band continued to play in popular clubs and arenas throughout the Philippines.
In 1990, the members reformed under the new name Intensity Five and re-entered the competition. The band finished second, and Pineda was named Best Vocalist. Pineda re-emerged in 1999 with a new solo album with Warner Brothers, following a series of unfortunate health problems in the early 1990s, including the brief loss of his voice. The self-titled album charted well in Asia.
After brief stints with a few different bands, Pineda found success again in 2006 with The Zoo, a band he formed with Monet Cajipe, a guitarist/songwriter who had been in all of his previous bands. The Zoo performed at several popular clubs in the area and, in 2007, MCA Universal released an album titled Zoology. Soon after, the band began covering songs by Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, and others, with over 200 performances uploaded to YouTube.
Neal Schon, guitarist and member of the band Journey, saw a video of Pineda on YouTube on June 28, 2007 and immediately contacted him. Pineda’s voice sounded strikingly similar to Steve Perry, Journey’s legendary former front man, and the band had been looking for a new lead singer.
Pineda made plans to fly to the United States and audition with the band in San Francisco after speaking with Schon on the phone. Pineda was introduced as the band’s new lead singer on December 5, 2007.
Pineda immediately joined the band on tour, performing two shows in Chile and two in Las Vegas. Both were enormously successful. Pineda gained popularity among the American public after a series of guest show appearances and magazine features.
Journey’s first album, Revelation, was released on June 3, 2008, and debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. The album was their highest charting album since Trial by Fire (with Steve Perry), and it was certified platinum in October 2008.
Following the release of the album, the band continued to tour the world with Pineda. Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey, a documentary set to be released in 2012, will follow the band’s “Revelation Tour” and Pineda’s early years with the band.
Pineda lives in the Philippines with his wife, Cherry, and their children, Cherub and Thea, when he is not on tour. He has two other sons from previous relationships, Matthew, 19, and Angelo, 13.
