Early Life and Kitchen Career

Anthony Bourdain was born on June 25, 1956, in New York City and raised in suburban New Jersey, where he developed an interest in literature and rock music. (His mother worked as a copy editor, and his father was a music executive.) After two years at Vassar College, Bourdain graduated from the world-renowned Culinary Institute of America in 1978.

After admitting to self-destructive drug use in his youth, Bourdain quickly rose through the ranks of New York restaurants such as the Supper Club, One Fifth Avenue, and Sullivan’s. In 1998, he was appointed executive chef at Brasserie Les Halles.

Culinary Writing

The New Yorker published Bourdain’s now-famous article “Don’t Eat Before Reading This” in 1997, a scathingly honest look at the inner workings of restaurants, particularly their kitchens. The article carried a lot of weight because of his reputation as a famous chef, and it led to other writing projects. In 2000, he released his best-selling book Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly, which was a vast expansion of a New Yorker article that highlighted Bourdain’s sometimes rough demeanor.

In 2001, he published A Cook’s Tour: Global Adventures in Extreme Cuisines, an account of exotic food and his travels around the world. The book was written in conjunction with his first television series, A Cook’s Tour, which premiered a year later and ran until 2003.

The 2000s: TV Successes and More Bestsellers

Bourdain began his two-season run on the Food Network’s A Cook’s Tour in 2002, a series in which he travels the world in search of culinary adventures. Bourdain published Les Halles Cookbook: Strategies, Recipes, and Techniques of Classic Bistro Cooking in 2004, and The Nasty Bits in 2006. Both books became New York Times best-sellers.

Bourdain debuted a new Travel Channel series, Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, in 2005, that explored similar themes to A Cook’s Tour. The show aired for nine seasons, ending in 2012, and drew a large audience while earning two Primetime Emmy Awards for cinematography. Also in 2005, due to the book’s enormous popularity, Fox aired a short-lived sitcom based on it. Anthony inspired the character “Jack Bourdain,” which was played by then-unknown actor Bradley Cooper.

Other Ventures

Bourdain has also appeared as a guest judge on Top Chef several times, and was one of the main judges on the eighth season of Top Chef All-Stars.

Bourdain, who is always looking for new experiences, appeared in an episode of the reality show Miami Ink, where he got a skull tattoo. He also had a brief cameo in the 2008 film Far Cry and played Dr. Tony on the children’s TV show Yo Gabba Gabba! He also worked as a writer and consultant on the television show Treme.

Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook, Bourdain’s next book, was published in 2010. He also wrote crime fiction, a historical account of Typhoid Mary in 2001, and the 2013 graphic novel Get Jiro!

Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, his return to series television in 2013, examined specific dining rituals around the world. The show won four Emmys, including three in a row for Outstanding Informational Series or Special from 2013 to 2015. In 2015, the culinary expert also announced the creation of Bourdain Market, a massive food hall in Manhattan, New York.

Personal Life and Daughter

After being married for nearly two decades, Bourdain married jujitsu expert Ottavia Busia in 2007. That year, they welcomed their daughter Ariane.

The couple announced their divorce plans in September 2016, claiming that their decision was mutual and amicable. Following that, Bourdain began dating Italian actress and director Asia Argento.

Death

On June 8, 2018, Bourdain was discovered dead in his hotel room in Kaysersberg, France, after committing suicide. He was in the neighborhood filming an episode of his Parts Unknown series.

“We can confirm the death of our friend and colleague, Anthony Bourdain, with extraordinary sadness,” CNN said in a statement. “His love of great adventure, new friends, fine food and drink, and extraordinary stories from around the world made him a one-of-a-kind storyteller. His abilities never ceased to amaze us, and we will miss him greatly. In this extremely difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his daughter and family.”

A toxicology report two weeks later revealed that no narcotics were found in Bourdain’s body. It was announced at the time that a biography of him was in the works. The bio was to be edited by Bourdain’s long-time assistant, Laurie Woolever, and published in the fall of 2019 as “an authorized portrait of the writer, veteran chef, and television traveler, built from stories shared by those who knew him best.”

The Television Academy Foundation announced six nominations for Parts Unknown for the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast on September 17, 2018.

CNN reported in August that Parts Unknown producers had enough material to complete one final season of the show. Although Bordain’s narration would appear in only one episode, his voice would be heard throughout the series due to on-location audio from his trips to New York City’s Lower East Side, the Texas-Mexico border area, Spain, and Indonesia. The penultimate episode, according to a CNN executive, will feature cast and crew members discussing their experiences on the show, with the finale focusing on “how Tony affected the world.”
