Early Life

Annette Bening was born on May 29, 1958, in Topeka, Kansas, to insurance salesman A. Grant Bening and church singer Shirley Bening. Bening is the youngest of four siblings, with two brothers and one sister. Bening grew up in San Diego, where he graduated from Patrick Henry High School in three years.

Bening was a drama student at a local college when she got a job as a dancer in The Green Show outside San Diego’s Old Globe Theatre. This experience led to a walk-on role in a Shakespeare production as well as roles in several plays with the San Diego Repertory Theatre. She relocated to San Francisco to pursue her education at San Francisco University. Bening was accepted by the American Conservatory Theatre after graduation, where she trained and later joined the acting company.

Bening relocated to New York, where she was nominated for a Tony Award and won the Clarence Derwent Award for Outstanding Debut Performance of the Season in 1986 for her work in Tina Howe’s Coastal Disturbances.

Film Debut

In The Great Outdoors (1988), a forgettable comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy, she made her film debut. The following year, she starred as the Marquise de Merteuil in Milos Forman’s Valmont (1989), catching the attention of director Stephen Frears, who had just released Dangerous Liaisons, his own version of the same story, six months earlier.

Breakthrough Role

In his stylish film noir, The Grifters, Frears cast Bening as a young hustler (1990). Despite the fact that Bening’s naked scenes received the most attention, the film and her performance were both critically acclaimed. She received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the role, as well as a National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Warren Beatty was so taken with her that he sought her out for the role of Virginia in Bugsy Malone (1991). Bening and Beatty fell in love while filming that film. She married the previously commitment-phobic Beatty in February 1992, after her divorce from her first husband, J. Steven White, was finalized in 1991.

Commercial Success

Bening took a three-year hiatus from her acting career to marry Beatty and start a family. When she returned, she co-starred with Beatty in Love Affair, a 1994 remake of the 1939 tearjerker. She rose to prominence in 1995 as a comedic performer in The American President, co-starring Michael Douglas, and as Queen Elizabeth in Ian McKellen’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard III (1995).

In 1996, Bening joined the oddball ensemble cast of Mars Attacks! She earned $3 million for her role in the terrorist thriller The Siege (1998), and she played a woman who develops a psychic link with a serial killer (played by Robert Downey Jr.) in the dark psychological thriller In Dreams (1999).

In 1999, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her performance as a materialistic suburban real estate agent in the darkly funny hit film American Beauty. In the 2000 film What Planet Are You From?, she played a woman who marries an extraterrestrial invader played by Garry Shandling. She won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in 2005 for her performance in the comedy Being Julia. Bening was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as Nic in the film The Kids Are All Right (2010). In 2016, Bening received another Golden Globe nomination for her role as a single mother in Mike Mills’ semi-autobiographical comedy-drama 20th Century Women.

Bening has also returned to the stage, co-starring with John Lithgow in the comedy The Female of the Species at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles in 2010 and in the Public Theatre’s King Lear at Shakespeare in the Park in New York in 2014.
